I have recently ordered a TH37PX70 after considering both it and its big brother, the TH42PX70. I am however worried I've ordered the wrong tv.. I will be sitting between 3.5-4 meters away from the TV, the kids however will (normally) be sitting on the floor slightly closer than this..

Will the 37" TV be right for this distance, or should I have gone for the 42"?

I want a TV that is BIG enough for the room (4mx4.5m), but not so big it makes the TV look out of place..

Will I still be impressed by its size? I currently have a 21" CRT, so anything will be better than that, but. ;)

I think the general concensus on here will be that you should go for at least a 42" screen if your viewing distance is about 4 metres. In fact, some would suggest a 50" at that distance.

    Hi rune,

My bedroom is approx 15x11 feet, relatively small.
I sit 13 feet away from my 50 inch plasma.
SD picture is perfectly watchable, HD great.

My Panasonic 42" PX70 is 2.5 metres away from viewing position.

At that distance no way could it be argued that it is too big, in fact I'm considering changing it to the 50" PX70 under JL28.

I would say you need at least 42" at your viewing distance and that 50" would satisfy you more. I think you'll find the 42" to be far too small at 3.5 - 4 metres away within a very small space of time & wished you'd gone for the 50".

If you watch an Anamorphic 2.35:1 film with a 42" from 3.5-4 metres away, don't expect to be able to see much smallish detail that is going on in the film.

I agree with most of the posts here. 50" is what you need. I sit about 10ft away from my Pioneer 507 and it doesn't look too large at all. In fact as i don't have speakers it looks no more obtrusive than the 42" hitachi 9700 I had previously.

In what respect does the wife need convincing?
Surely you decide on the technological matters and let her decide on the soft household ones, such as drapes, bedding, etc?

    Get a 42, tell her it's a 37, and that'll be the last you'll hear about it.
If she complains it's too big, remind her that bigger is better when it comes to reproducing................movies, etc.

Get the 42. You will regret it big-time if you dont. I sit 2-2.5 metres away from my 37" and I regret not getting the 42".

I sit about 2.5m away from my Panasonic 37" and it is just fine for me. Not too obtrusive in the room and the girlfriend has not objected to it.

Even if I wanted to, I couldn't fit a 42" or more in the corner of the room anyway.

Plasmas have a funny habit of shrinking over time, whatever size you choose it will appear much smaller after a few weeks

After a few months it will be almost miniscule and the 50" will seem ideal ;)

I have a 37" panny at those distances and I am very happy with it.

There are times when I wish it was bigger, mostly with films, but I intend to add a projector to my set up sometime soon to handle that.

One thing I would add though is that if you have, or are planning to have, an HD source in the future then you won't really be benifiting from the extra resolution on a screen that size from that distance.

You really really must get a 42".
You WILL regret getting a 37.

    I thought about getting a 37 and eventually got a 42.
Initially it looked huge but after about 2 weeks it started to look quite small.
Now I'm thinking I should have got a 50"..... Damn.!

Depending on where I sit I can be between 7 and 11 feet from the screen.
Since reading your post I tried watching it at 6 feet... it's fine.

Jonstone is absolutly right about HD too.

    Get a 42.

I couldnt make up my mind (even though most of you say 42"), so I am having the 37" delivered today.. I will connect it up and if we feel we have made the wrong decision return it for a 42".. The Dixons guy said that would be OK, other are saying once you open the box that's it.. Hopefully it will be perfectly fine and we wont have to return it. :)

    Thanks for all your input.

    Just a quick update..

The 37" PX70 was delivered yesterday and first impression is that this size is the right one for me; looks impressive from the sofa and fits the room really well. I am sure a 42" would look even more impressive, but I think it would have looked too big for the room (4m x 4.5m), and made it into a TV with a room rather than a room with a TV, if you see what I mean..

Other than that I am very pleased with the TV, picture quality is really good.

Thanks for the input I got.

    Nice!

    I'm thinking in a 37PX70 for my 4,5 x 4.8m room.

In think it will be perfect...

Or a 42"... and take it if I change to a bigger house/room...:D

    Believe me, in about 2 - 3 weeks you'll wish you'd got the 42"

It takes a while to get used to the size and realise it should be bigger.
