Right, so my 360 has reached a point in its life where it can't read any discs 80% of the time- just displays "open tray" in the dashboard.

Obviously i'm going to have to send it off to be replaced- i'm guessing my only opinion is microsoft. However i'll be seriously annoyed if they demand the hard drive back as well.... What is the usual procedure for returns?? Does everything have to go back or do they just except the console in some circumstances??

    Thanx

Cant you just return it to the shop you got it from?

Also it is possible that it is the HDD at fault and not the 360 so it is probaley always best to return everything.
Saying that though I know several people on here have been able to swap just the console over and keep the original HDD and cables.

nah its def just the console- tried it without the hard drive, and besides its only reading discs thats the problem.

I got it from play so dont think they'd accept a return from nigh on 6months ago. So people have returned just the console to microsoft before?

Yeah, but you'll prolly have to send the power brick as well.

Just ask them when you call that you'd like to keep your hard drive and there should be no problems. They'll inform you what to send in the box back that they send you.

Mine did exactly the same - Console on it's way out. :thumbsdow

Microsoft now give you the option on whether you want to keep or send the hard drive back - This is if, as in your case, the drive isn't the part thats faulty.

Mine is having the same problem now after a clean 7 months without a single crash. Getting it picked up by courier tomorrow hopefully. I only have to send back the console and can keep everything else. Would be less keen to try and take it back to Argos as that would mean losing all the data on my HDD.

my brother in law has just experienced a similar problem with the xbox 360 not reading disks, he has 7 titles 5 that will no longer read in xbox. he bought the system second hand so has no receipt. i rang ms on his behalf and after explaining the problem the chap said he would forward me the necessary stickers to attach to the box for ups collection, he didn't ask me where it was purchased from or receipt, he just needed the s/n.

furthermore, he only wanted the xbox360 posted back nothing else. i asked if this was a common problem, his reply was that he couldn't comment. i queried if they would be repairing the unit or sending a refurb, he said a repair. hope this helps.

Hate to say this really - my launch day one went this way and I got it repaired by MS in April (Game were being plonkers and it easier to send back than argue). Last week the 360 went again! same issue as this for a second time. Called MS and UPS collected it today (so should change my tag!)

The rep at MS said it would be marked for exchange rarther than repair this time. Oh and this is a DVD drive error as far as I can find out, don`t need to send anything but the console.
