Didn't whether to post this here or in 360 HD-DVD section so stuck it here.

Got this from another site but no link to article so make of it what you will but if true it was bound to happen:

    Cue Sony making a HD-DVD add-on player?

MS have said all along that they are not tied to either format.

TBH - Sticking a HD movie playing into a games console is pretty much pointless (unless your games depend on it).

With Toshiba supposedly releasing a sub $200 standalone HD-DVD player by xmas, I can't see the need for any console add-ons. [Hands up who bought a Xbox360 HD-DVD drive on release and has only ever played King Kong]. - :suicide:

Longer term, HD-DVD or Bluray, it'll be irrelevant. We will buy/rent and watch our HD movies, streamed over the internet AKA iTunes style. It'll be more to do with storage than physical disc formats.

I have a few HD DVD films but have stopped buying them because of the poor sound. I've instead bought Blu Rays for my PS3. I wish MS would concentrate on the poor sound of the hd dvd drive before looking to do something else.

Its non-story and nothing has been said that hasnt before. IF HD-DVD loses the war MS would consider a BD Add-on.

Anyway if the alleged Wal-Mart order for loads of cheap Chinese HD-DVD players is true then BD could be in trouble as HD-DVD would walk it if they flood the market.

There aren't many films out on HD-DVD at the moment that I either haven't already seen or are not that bothered about (or already have on SD and am too tight to upgrade).

I was hoping that there would be a big influx of HD-DVD titles but this has still to materialise.

Not enough major studios support HD DVD so you will find that there will be a shortage. The hi def releases i want at the mo (Rocky 6, Pirates of the Carribean 1 & 2 and Deja Vu) are all blu ray only releases. The Universal films i want like Hot Fuzz are only coming out on DVD and not HD DVD. Wheres the point in that.

Has been closed on the PS3 forum as, it appears, this article is false (ie entirely made-up)...

    This statement contradicts itself.

Whilst there was a stage that I would have agreed with that, now I'm not so sure. With Wal_mart giving the massive HD-DVD order, and the chinese to start pretty soon, I reckon there is more mileage in this yet. Most likely outcome? I still think dual format players will win, IF the BR consortium allow them at a suitable price.

    That would be me!

I actually have a few HD-DVD movies I want to watch, but have given up on the Xbox-360 since the fan noise makes it a waste as any form of DVD player.

The audio issues mentioned above are another reason I haven't watched them yet. I'm considering putting the Xbox into my car, driving it to the other end of the road and using some long cables back to the amp and TV.

Only problem is: I need one of those Harmony wireless remotes.

Seems very bizzare statement from M$ about a Blu-ray add-on. Talk about how to confuse people. Surely though it cannot be as much as a disaster as the UK launch of the HD-DVD addon (none in stock for months and months until about a month before the PS3 release! )

    What do you mean IF...:)

I thought that story had been debunked as a load of rubbish? Even with cheap players its the content that sells the system - HD-DVD just doesnt have the Spidermans, Bond's, POTC etc to sell the format.

It would be a major PR victory for Sony if MS had to release a Blu-ray add on - they may back track now and say they were neutral all along but the truth is obvious.

You never know MS might bring out a combined HD/Blu Ray add on drive!

It's funny how this speculation is either being portrayed as a coup for MS and a PS3 killer (one less major reason to own a PS3) or an admission of defeat for MS and Sony winning again.

Personally I see it as neither, but just hopefully a way I can get to see Blu-Ray movies without shelling out a packet. Vive la choice!

Seems a great idea from MS's point of view. If they release a BD drive then you could get a core, a HDDVD drive and a Blu Ray drive for probably around £400! That's both HD movie formats and a great console for less than the price of a PS3. It would reduce the amount of 360 owners who buy PS3's for blu ray functionality. I must say that my 360 HDDVD player has had plenty of use and the quality is fantastic for such a cheap player! I wouldn't personally bother with a BD player for the 360 as I have a PS3, but it's still a great idea, providing the cost is about the same as the HDDVD player.

I have not bought that many due to the sound issues. Discs like the NIN:Beside You In Time True HD soundtrack are unplayable on the 360 drive due to bad crackling and no sub or surround channels. It plays fine on stand alone players though.

Stuff like this has put me off buying loads of HD-DVD's until I know what is happening with the supposed fix from MS.
