32pf9986 and dv-585a

As I said in another post I bought a 32PF9986. Then I had a dv-585a as a gift. I wanted to enjoy progressive scan and I connected the player via DVI. I didn't get any image but a blue screen. Then I learned from this forum that this could happen because of the LCD firmware. I checked and found out my LCD was equipped with 1.3 version (eventhough I bought it a month ago!). So I am trying to get a new LCD from the retailer. But they claim the LCD can handle a 720p signal but not a 5XXp one .....and the player outputs the last one. Is this true? Shouldn't the LCD be capable of upgrading the signal to the 720p one? Which is the difference? Plus, which DVD player would best 'fit' the 32pf9986 (I don't want to spend more than 300-350 euro)?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Best picture you will get from RGB Scart with decent cable, because Philips 9986 has much better deinterlacer scaler than DV585a and any DVD player in price class - 600 euro.
