I haven't seen any of these LCD screens in the flesh but which of these would be the best quality picture? Would like 37" but worried hitachi and panasonic are better. btw. In a 4x4m room.

    32" LCD
    Hitachi 32LD7200 (+port-dvd) £1,250
    Panasonic TX32LXD500 £1,450

    37" LCD
    Sharp LC-37GA6E £1,550
    JVC LT-37DS6 (+dvdr+stand) £1,750
    Sharp LC-37GD7E £1,850

Depends on your viewing distance.. Sure hitachi probably has good pq but if you view it from far away then 37" jvc or sharp is better buy.

We will be sitting between 3-3.5m from the screen.

32"- in a 4m x 4m room, this would be nore than sufficient and not dominate it.
That's what I'd go with and spend some of the saving on a nice DVD Recorder with HDD or something like Samsung's 850/950 DVD player which will output DVDs at 720p. It won't be true HD, but it will give the DVD a nice little lift in quality.

37" seems better for 1:2.35 movies 32" for TV. I'll probably get a projector in the future, so maybe I should stick with 32" till then.
Although the 32" Hitachi with side speakers looks similar in size to the 37" JVC with a bottom speaker...

Well i have projector already and i am looking for mainly tv myself too. I was thinking LCD because of computer use also easily possible with it. Other option (only for tv use) was 37" panasonic plasma.

I've looked at the plasma options, but like you say, LCD seems better suited to media PC use.
Is there an ideal hieght displays should be set at? I think that if the 37" is too big for the corner of he room I'd have to wall mount it over the (working) fire place. under side would be 1.3m above floor level.

I need to find somewhere that stocks these displays in northeast/central london....

So what is good taste when deciding on LCD size? I sit 3 metres from the TV and was thinking 32" widescreen is a little smaller (14%) for when watching the odd 4:3 TV program still being aired but ample for movies and gaming.

I was considering the 32" or 37" JVC and would like the largest screen possible while still keeping it as a living room.

If anyone is interested this is a pretty useful site to compare 16:9 with 4:3 http://www.cavecreations.com/tv2.cgi

Also this http://www.myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html is useful for viewing distances but it is more of a technical answer not one of good taste ;-)

    handy links :)

Looks like I'm going for the 37" JVC unless I can hold out for the Sharp GA6E.
