I have recently entered the DVD market with the purchase of a Sony DVD Recorder/Player.
I am now replacing my favourite films with DVD’s.

Here are 3 Films that I am currently thinking of replacing shortly and would like to know a few things about them, hopefully some on here has got them and would be kind enough to help me out?

    The Films
    American Werewolf In London
    Evil Dead 2
    Jaws

    The Questions
Which copy would be the better one to buy? (DTS/DD).
Region 1 Or Region 2 is there any differences in sound and picture quality between them?
Is there a substantial improvement over the VHS version of these films?
Is it possible to get R1 copies in the UK?

    Look forward to your replies.

    Cheers.

try dvdcompare.net for the info you require as to which region has the best disc format and use dvdpricecheck.co.uk to find the best price for that region. Works for me. (excellent choice of films btw).

I've got two out of the three DVDs you mention (minus the Evil Dead 2), but only R2 versions......and in my opinion both UK versions are superb. However i've not been able to compare them against R1 versions, but will there be that much difference in quality considering the ages of the films in the first place?

    American Werewolf In London :-

"OVERALL : R1 - for the inclusion of a DTS soundtrack and minor additional extras."

Evil Dead II AKA Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn (1987):-
"OVERALL : Draw - If you're a real fan of the film, you'll want to track down one of the R1 Limited Edition tins, since it has the exclusive poster replica and 48 page booklet.
Also, the R2 UK box set has the exclusive extra-material on the 4th disc. UK-releases are missing the still galleries and "Evil Dead: Hail To The King" video game preview.
And Finally the French CE also has additional unique extras on the second disc. A true fan and collector would possibly consider all these releases, otherwise the choice is yours as to what is more important."

    Jaws:-

    "OVERALL : Draw"

Ages of films can affect quality , but, a lot of the popular films have been remastered (cleaned up and sound track remixed) and can be as good as or sometimes even better than more modern dvd's where care hasn't been taked when producing the discs.
    :D

    Thanks for the replays.

I had a look at the sites you mentioned, Hawklord. Very interesting. Could cost me a fortune. LOL.

I know I only mentioned 3 films, but I would dearly love to get my hands on a copy of 'Horror of Dracula'. The hammer horror film from 1957, with Christopher Lee.
I suppose any region would do for a film that old.

Oh and 'The Thing' from 1981. Yikes I could on.

Thanks again to all. Any other Info you have please do tell.
