Hi,

I've been researching for the past week. I just moved to a new apartment as I broke up with my girlfriend and looking to add some speakers to my setup.
The details of that is usually asked around here
  • I'm located in Europe, in Hungary.
  • I have a budget of about 2700 USD / 2200 EUR / 785 000 HUF maximum.
  • The used market for this stuff around here is dead, I looked up facebook marketplace and local used goods websites + ebay.
  • I have an LG C9 55" and a PS5
  • I will be using this system for:
    • listen to Spotify / youtube music. As for speakers, music quality is more important than movie sound quality but I would like to get clear dialog from movies.
      • I listen to a wide variety of music such as: Progressive house and other electronic stuff, Rock music, some rap music, some Jazz when in the mood and some pop songs.
    • watching netflix and similar streaming content (the source is the TV) + the occasional large high bitrate BlueRay movie downloads. Again I would like to get a clear dialog from movies. Previously we used a JBL soundbar and many times I could only watch stuffs with the subtitles on.
    • gaming on my PS 5
  • I am planning now to go 3.0, later add the sub and the max expansion I can imagine now is the 5.1 setup so I want to keep that extensibility.
  • The room is in an "attic" and it's medium sized (about 20sqm (4x5m) or 220 square foot), + it opens to a kitchen area on top of that.
I was looking to get here the:
  1. Dali oberion 5 floor standing speakers (I can't trial speakers at the moment thanks to covid so ill just go with it based on reviews)
  2. Dali oberion vocal
  3. Denon avc-x3700hs (eyeing it for the XT32 to help with the angled walls and the HDMI 2.1)
I attached pictures of the location of this setup, please forgive the mess I just moved in yesterday.

My question is does this setup make sense? Would it work in the attic situation? Am I wasting money somewhere?

Thank you for your help!

Did you look for 2nd hand Dali Zensor 5 and Zensor Vokal? Also Zensor 3 standmount model would be good choice. Zensor is the earlier version of Oberons and if you could find them they should be LOT cheaper cause Dali is very expensive usually as new. Alternative option in that class could be Monitor Audio Bronze 200 and Bronze C150. Really shame you can`t go listen the speakers as the hifi shops should be now opening in many countries.. It would take literally 30-60min to get idea which type of sound you like best. There is lot of competition in that price range.

X3700H is good pick, but if you aren´t in hurry i might wait just tad longer and/or try to get information will X3800H be introduced later in the year. If yes then you should wait as the X3700H would go on sale at July roughly. If no new model this year then proceed as planned and if you buy new speakers try to make a good "package deal". Don`t buy them separate as you should always get more discount the more stuff you buy!

Onkyo NR7100 will be intresting choice coming on June with Dirac Live so this could be game changer in this price class! 900$, not sure about EU price.

I might start with 2.0 system so you can save up the subwoofer money faster cause the system is going to sound quite anemic without it. You can live without center channel for while especially with that not so optimal space you have at front. Shame you have those big cabinets making it bit trickier to get optimal speaker placement. For subwoofer you should save up roughly 700-800€ or more depending what kind of experience you are after. For some reason Hungary dealer link doesn´t work, when it does that SVS model would be ideal for your medium/large space (699€). Alternative option would be Arendal woofers example 1961 1S if you looking something more compact. And finally XTZ 12.17 Edge is very popular choice in Europe.
XTZ - SUB 12.17 EDGE - Subwoofers

Hi,

I just saw an offer for the Denon-X4400H for 190 euros (230 usd) less than a new Marantz x3700h.
Do you think that is a worthy trade for my use case?

Thank you!

If you don´t need some of the latest features or hdmi 2.1 connections and you are fine to buy used receiver then yeah go ahead! It`s quite cheap, but there is always risks buying used electronics.

Thanks for your help. I think I managed to tame my excitement and wait for the Onkyo NR7100 hoping the HDMI 2.1 is implemented correctly in those receivers :)
