Just managed to buy a Denon 2900 on ebay for £250 and as a result I am now looking to upgrade my receiver from a Sherwood 7106.

I want something that will perform well in stereo (but I realise with HT receivers this will be relative!) and still give a great surround experience. Also being a cheapskate, I am looking to buy second hand.

I have been looking for Denon 3803's or 2803's but I have recently seen a Marantz 6200 which I think might fit the bill too.

Anyone have any ideas for any other models to look out for or any recommendations for something that would match the 2900 well?

Oh yeah, I'm using Acoustic Energy Asprit 309/307 and 300c speakers with a Velodyne CHT-10 sub...found the power buy forum and got carried away :D

Unless you need the video conversion offered by the 3803 I'd look for a 3802 (I bought one last year on here for £300 but now they should be about £250ish). If you have more to spend then I'd look further up the older Denon/Marantz range instead of going for newer versions.

I'd also consider used seperates. In my main system I went from the 3802 to an old Sony EP9 processor (£80) and a Rotel RB985 MKII 5 channel power amp (£270) and although it lacks dts (your dvd player has a decoder for this though) and prologic2 the sound quality on stereo and dolby digital is vastly better than the 3802.

Thanks Bassbin, not too keen on the separates idea as I'll never get more boxes past the missus!

Interesting about the 3802 though. Managed to find a Marantz 5300 for £200 which is very tempting too!

Anybody got/had a 5300 and can give me an opinion on it?
