Can anyone tell me what an 8 month old 504 with speakers and wall bracket is worth (standard warranty).

Also, while we're at it, an 8 month old AX5i and 868.

Could be emigrating soon and need to decide whether it's worth shipping it all over or selling up and buying new when we get over there.

Your timing is terrible. Given that I just bought a 504 on Saturday!!!

I may be in the market for an 868 though. I'll watch the post with interest!

    Cheers

No worries - I'm sure there are plenty of people still struggling with the old 434/504 problem.
Besides, you can always get another 'un for the bedroom... :D

Nothing's definite yet but we're doing some groundwork so we know what's what.

A difficult one. I reckon if you price it a tad lower than a new 434 then that may be enough to tempt someone into taking it. I know I'd be looking around the £4k mark (probably a tad under) if I were to sell mine (which I'm not, yet anyway :D )

I too would take the 868 off your hands :)

Thanks Messiah - I had reckoned on around £4k so I will take a hit on it but not too much.

As for the 868, bearing in mind they're still quite hard to get hold of, I suppose I would lose less on that, if any at all....?

Having the boxes helps enourmously on 2nd hand gear. New prices haven't moved much since you bought all that, at least you haven't got that to count against it. I'd have thought 4k should get you some offers.

Kept all the boxes on the assumption that I would need them when shipping.
Just got some provisional quotes and it's about £2,500 for a 20' container from home to the port in Turkey and another £500 for the last leg to the apartment.
Add to that insurance and the unknown but probably quite high customs charges and it's looking like about £5k or so to ship everything across (probably more depending on how much we are blackmailed by the customs staff).

As everything else we own is basically junk, there's little point in spending £5k to ship 3 bits of AV gear so it lools like it could all be up for sale soon...:(

I just hope it's possible to get something half decent over in Turkey.
If not, I could always set up in business myself :D

My wifes cousin used to run a hi-fi business in Istanbul but when the financial crisis hit, business dried up.
I suspect there would be potential in some of the major cities (e.g. Antalya) but I wouldn't know the first thing about setting up an AV business...

Surprisingly good. The great thing about Turkey is that 99% of the (wealthy) population live in something like 5% of the country. And Istanbul and Ankara are basically that 5%. Not much of a market for custom installation type jobs or the type of high-overhead business that would require a shopfront etc, but a huge market for just plasma screen supply/export. They're everywhere in Istanbul right now.

It'd have Brogan back on his hamster wheel though. It's not all beer and skittles you know! Mind you, Liam, perhaps we ought to have a pint and a game sometime, not being a zillion miles apart in terms of businees or geography?

You're just about spot on there except most (all) of the rich also own holiday homes all along the south coast which they visit very frequently and when they're in them they still like their luxuries.
I think there is a good opportunity for someone willing to take a small risk but without having a background in it, I wouldn't know where to start.
The only thing I can think of that would cause a problem is luxury goods tax which runs at about 40%-60%!

Plasmas aren't a luxury, they are AV presentation equipment, fully tax deductible, and written off in the 1st year.

Yeah we've tried getting into building those holiday homes!! Probably gonna do a hotel development instead, the one we have in mind has one area behind that is purely for the hyper-rich - 10 apartments with a hillside view of beach below and a private James Bond style cablecar!!

Try telling that to the local customs officer who will basically look in his instructions, not find a plasma listed and then charge tax on it for being a luxury item and electrical.
Then he will add on a bit for himself, as will the other 5 officials that you will have to get clearance from.
Trust me, there are no rules when it comes to Turkish customs.

When I worked there a few years ago (for Nokia) we had a slush fund which was specifically used to pay off customs men who were illegally holding our GSM network equipment.

The really posh place was in Marmaris. The guy who is selling the half complete site has a website with photos and I can't for the life of me find the link!! Haven't flown out there to see it myself, my Dad is enjoying that pleasure right now - somehow taking three and a half weeks to visit Istanbul, Marmaris and the Black Sea. Where it just happens to be 40 degrees and sunny right now....

I know what you mean - we came back about a month ago and it was just over 40 degrees.
It was 10 degrees here when we landed. :(

Be very careful when buying land/property.
A lot of people get ripped off - even Turks.
There are quite strict building reg's in some places.
Also, you will pay a lot more than a Turk as you're a foreigner.
Luckily I have family to help in the negotiations so we should get a great deal on any place we decide to go for.
Saw a nice plot of land for 5,000 Euros when we were over there.
Add to that the cost of a 250m2 villa (about 45,000) and you've got a nice place for about £35K.

    Good news!
Just found out that as my wife has been out of the country (Turkey) for 2 years, she can import all household goods with no duties.
At the worst, we may have to pay a few hundred Euros for the plasma and receiver (seems to be just items that are capable of receiving radio & TV signals).

Also, we might have found a company that will charge for shipping based on actual volume which will be a lot less than a 20' container so all in we could be looking at a few grand total....which is nice.

    Result! :D :hiya:
