2G/3G Iphone - what's the difference?

Looking for a cheapish Iphone for my wife to replace the Samsung M1 that she has never really got on with.
Having an Ipod etc is more important than internet and I've seen some 2G iphones for sensible money.
Apart from the better 3G coverage is here any major difference betwen a 2G and 3G phone?

Not much AFAIK. The 3G was the main difference, and the 2G was arguably better built.
