I think your review sums up this curio very well, though I think you've been a bit generous with your overall rating.

It's a very tonally uneven film that never quite knows what it wants to be or say, whether to celebrate its participants or laugh at their naivety. It's a film that definitely lives up to the adage that "truth is stranger than fiction" and is only really enlivened by, as you say, the musical performances.

I remember going to see this at the cinema and coming away very unimpressed. Two years' later, another similar type of film called, "It's All Gone Pete Tong", was released and again I went to the cinema to see this too.

It's a much better film overall - the central performances are stronger, it has a clearer sense of what it's trying to say and the music is simply fantastic!

As to your reference to a record that Factory lost money on: that would be the 12" of "Blue Monday" with its classic die cut floppy disc sleeve. Yes, it was a terrible design decision financially speaking, but an absolutely pivotal moment in Dance music.

      And I've still got mine!

This is a solid 8 for me, I thought Coogan was brilliant as Tony Wilson... I grew up watching him on Granada (I even went to a recording of "So it Goes") and Coogan has got him off to a tee.

A great supporting cast too, particularly Ralf Little as Hooky, Sean Harris as Ian Curtis... and Andy Serkis is a perfect Martin Hannet.

I used to go to The Hacienda a fair bit and the reconstruction gave me goosebumps :p

A really entertaining film with loads of dark humour.
Ignore picture quality and enjoy the story.

I love the whole Factory records story and have several films and documentaries based around it. There's some superb books around too.
I've got this film on DVD which I pull out now and then and it sounds like this release is not much of an upgrade visually over that which is a shame. I guess you can't do that much if you have an SD source (similar to 28 Days Later which I had to check I had't put the DVD in my player when watching the BluRay).
Cheers for the review Cas. I may have to dig it out again.

I believe cooghan has said Tony Wilson was one of the inspirations for Alan partridge so they will be similar to some degree

Nice review Cas. I remember enjoying this film years ago with friends of the time - and this film not feeling too far from reality for some of us in a way! I might pick this up to see how well (or not) its aged. And yeah - Coogan does really seem like Partridge in this!

A great film, I was already aware it was shot in SD long before this was announced but knew I'd be on it like a tramp on a chip just for the audio upgrade.

Yes the PQ is poor. Yes the soundtrack is front dominated, but to give the film itself only a 7/10 is shocking. One of the greatest films ever made about the English music industry and the best Manchester film bar none. Outrageously poor score for such a great (and funny) film!!

I’d completely forgotten this was shot in SD. Doh!

Hopefully the audio justifies the purchase, I love this film.

Back down to £8 on Amazon. Is also £8 in Sainsbury's.
