24 bit wavs in media player

I'm trying to get media player (the one that comes with XP) to play 24 bit wav files.

At the moment, when I load a 24 bit wav file, it tries to connect to a server to download the required codec, but does not manage to find one.

I've been searching the net to see if I can find such a codec, without success. Does anyone know if such a thing exists?

I can play the files fine in Cool Edit 2000, but I need to have the codec installed, so that all the other apps that use the standard windows codecs (like media player) can play these files.

I know I can just convert the 24 bit files to 16 bit, but I have a specific need to play 24 bit files in this way.
