The magazine reports on this drive were true.

The spinning noise whilst watching quiet scenes in a film are driving me mad.

I can't believe i didnt take notice of the report on this problem in whatvideotv magazine and am surprised more people who own them haven't mentioned it!!.

I too am sensitive to drive noise and have only found one quiet player so far - TMA DVD32R at £4k. Even this can be heard when in a menu or skipping chapter but settles down to near silence when playing.

The odd thing is that different machines are noisy under differing circumstances. I presently own a Wharfedale DVD750 and a Cyberhome 512. The '750 is quiet for CD playback but noisy for DVD depending on position on the disk (Quiet at first but progressively worse as you get near the layer change - watch out for that one). The '512 (which uses a PC ROM drive) sounds like a spin dryer for CD playback but is relatively quiet for DVD. I have also tried the Arcam DV27 which again was noisy for CD playback spoiling otherwise excellent sound quality.

So the only advice I can give is try (at home) before you buy and price does not necessarily guarantee performance.

    Matt.

I took ownership of my 210e on Friday but it was only yesterday that I managed to sit down and watch a film(Gladiator by the way), I must admit I payed no attention to any drive noise what-so-ever, but then again I was really looking forward to the film so it would have had to be bad to have spoilt my enjoyment.I have just put a disc in it with the tv sound off, apart from the initial loading and the player locating the opening scenes I haven't heard a murmur out of it,dont know if I've just been lucky or viceversa you haven't.Great little player though, picture and sound 2nd to none, I'm very happy with mine.

I didnt notice it with Gladiator either.<br />But watching a film with quieter scenes in it became extremely noticeable.

I must say that my 210 only makes a noticable noises when loading, ejecting and changing menus etc. Maybe its some mods that cause this player noise that people are hearing!

Chill Dom, nobody is rubbishing the TAG <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

OK so it's a bit noisy, but hardly likely to make you want to send it back. I notice there are no felt/rubber feet on it so any chassis noise is gonna be amplified if you have it resting on a hard surface.

I'll be sticking some suitable material on the bottom of my feet[4!] if I come across a title that is spoilt by it <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

you miss what I was trying to say. If some wants to rubbish the Tag, fine, I don't have a problem with that so long as what they are saying is from an informed stand point not a cheap jab. I wasn't sure what was here hence the question in the first sentence.

I am a huge fan of the Toshiba players and had written about they virtues on many occasions here. I think that they are doing things better than the competition at the moment (chinese, panny, sony, pioneer etc) but I don't think they are especially noisey. Just about all DVD palyers will make more noise during loading etc but during films they should be fine. If it is too much, then this doesn't sound like the Toshibas I know. If it is whisper quiet then brilliant.

You seem to be alone on this one.I still think your player isn't that noisey. I have been thinking about this all week. Either you are very sensitive to drive noise, in which case it's a Tag, or there is something not quite right about your 210. Is it worth checking out with your supplier?

I agree with Radioactive__Man by trying some rubber feet. Also what's the player sitting on?A decent rack may be the anwser but It'll propablly cost more than your DVD. I once complained to my supplier about drive noise (not 210E)He said it could be dust in the mechanism (could have been there from new)I felt a bit fobbed off but it may be worth investigating?

The player is positioned solidly on a toshiba shelf.<br />I am v surprised more people here with this player haven't confirm my problem.<br />The player is clearly audioable whilst playing a disc.

I have this player as well, the drive makes a slight noise but nothing more, maybe its just your particular unit, i´m sat quite close to mine as well, about 4ft.

Certainly doesnt bother me, even in the quiet parts of films. I´d take yours back to the place that sold you it.

    cheers

Firstly, I am not trying to antagonise or argue with you, but have you tried listening to another 210?.

I reckon there are 3 other owners here with the same model, and not one of us in too unhappy about the noise level affecting our enjoyment.

Also, although it is positioned on a Toshiba shelf, can I assume that it's the cabinet that supports your telly?. Maybe this is contributing to the noise if it is the usual type of closed side, open back design.

Has it been modded by Techtronics? That might explain it.

I've got the 210e with Techtronics mod and whilst it's noisey spinning up the disk when you put it in, it's not noticeably noisey when you're watching something.

Is the shelf on the TV stand secure - possibly getting vibration?!?!?

    Cheers<br />OG

Well just spoke too a freind who brought this tosh.. and just like some of u guys hes reported he thinks the drives too noisy though, and it can ruin it sometimes when the film hes watching!

See I was wondering this Tosh 210e seems too have got 5/5 for both picture/sound? its scooped up all the awards? Its also compared too £500 DVD players!

But the noisy drive obviously brings it back down.

Can anyone here tell me if the picture/sound quality is REALLY better then Cyberhome/Wharfedale and other budget type players?

Im considering ditching my silent Scan (which makes no noise at all) for it, but only if the picture/sound is really that impressive !

Cool ta for quick responce, I regret getting my Scan DVD player now <img src="frown.gif" border="0">

But I can always sell it off cheaply and just upgrade easily.

I care about picture/sound quality above all else, and why not I got a Sherwood 5.1 100x5 watt amp/reciever.
