2019 Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) hits the UK

Hong Kong have had far stricter measures than the UK and no doubt better compliance. It just goes to show lock downs don't really work, they just delay the infection spread to a degree. The virus will eventually run of steam, but lock downs are just prolonging the process. We need to let it run its course, shielding the elderly and vulnerable in the meantime.

Nobody at this point really knows how COVID-19 is going to behave long term, either it'll disappear like SARS did or it will hang around like MERS. The main thing we can do for now is minimise the risk of infection as best we can until we either get effective drug treatments or one of the vaccine candidates is shown to be viable. So far the Oxford University vaccine is showing signs it might be viable, along with a few others. The Economy will recover over the long term (I'm sure there will be some good opportunities for new businesses in time) , right now all I care about is that we save as many lives as possible. The knock on effects of a high mortality rate cannot be underestimated.

I guess the crux of the problem in the UK is - Cummings broke lockdown rules, no punishment some people decided "If he can get away with it, so can I" and Boris Johnson rushing into easing the lockdown too quickly has likely sent us backwards. Oxford has an infection spike in the eastern end of the city. So I'll not be surprised if the city has to lockdown again. From what I've been hearing, very little in the way of social distancing and mask wearing has been taking place. Especially on the Cowley Road at the weekends (Cowley Road = Pubs and restaurants).

I imagine the vast majority of local outbreaks / localised jump in figures can likely be attributed to working / living conditions and factors around them, more than socialising etc. (And I’m saying this as someone who would be more than happy for pubs to still be closed and having worked dealing with them since this started wheee applicable)

The council area I live in has seen 3 “spikes”

Two in abattoirs, both owned by same company but at separate locations. Both of these are staffed by Romanian / Polish workers, with I think 95 percent of staff at one of them being from Romania. These people work long hours and work hard. In cramped and difficult conditions. But not only that, they likely live together and travel to work together. Again I cramped conditions.

The other location was a travellers camp consisting of around 16 or so families. This camp was connected with a sister camp less than 20 miles away, but covered by different council.

We are a very rural county

I imagine it’s hugely similar in all locations mentioned so far.
persons working long and hard hours in cramped conditions for a small amount of pay who then return home, to live with other people, working in similar conditions. Many, I imagine living with at least 3 generations of the same family in the home

There will also be huge language / educational barriers for people over all this

For all those people saying how little info they have or how confused they are over the guidelines, just imagine how hard it may be if you don’t speak English. How confused and scared may some of these families be ?

yes, there will always be idiots. Yes there will always be people who over step the line and breach guidance, I’ve dealt with a fair few these last few months, but the majority are trying to do what can and trying to help.

I imagine there is little doubt that the decision made about gatherings was done so with Eid in mind, but I do question if they would do similar on 23rd / 24th of December

Putting this in spoiler tags.

It's not for the faint hearted. Proof that plots have been lost.

You have been warned.

That poses an interesting situation. I could visit my father in law but can't visit my mate who lives on the same road but 2 houses up from the sign that says welcome to Sandwell.
There's a road about a mile from here where one half is Oadby and Wigston DC and the other half is Leicester City Council. Can tell this from their wheelie bins

The border is the side road between the two.

Not mentioned in the media as much as last time. Bournemouth's beaches are crowded again.

What's this thing people NEED to visit a beach when its warm weather? Again SD was out of the window.

Trains going to the coast are quite packed too from the pictures I have seen, lot of the people wearing masks though.

Personally never seen the appeal of sitting in the sun in a very crowded place all day. Rather get out and explore somewhere new.

Because it’s not remotely worrisome for about 90% plus of the population.

Lockdown or not, it makes no difference to many people because many people break the rules anyway. The police are too lenient. There's still a stigma attached to wearing masks. Plenty of people going about as before the pandemic and not changing much how they go about daily lives. Maybe washing hands a little more frequently and social distancing some of the time, and that's about it.

I think Chris Whitty's words earlier were a bit of a wake-up call to how far at least they think we are from getting back to some semblance of normal.

And I think these "bubbles" and "household" regs are lost on most people now, and I see no scenario where they are adhered to much anymore either.

People aren't interested in listening or being told what to do. Putting a mask on is okay, but being told who you can and can't see over summer isn't going to fly with the public.

Cooler air, quick dip in the sea to cool off. I get it. But not when it is crowded. My idea of hell!

I used to suffer from hay fever really bad (still do, but not as bad as I used to). After a day at work I'd often take a detour to a nearby coastline just to breathe.

I said to my parents, beaches would have been crowded today if there wasn't this global pandemic virus about.

Went to the corner shop / post office , counted at least 10 people not wearing a mask , went for fuel and about the same walking in and out of the shop , it appears as though a lot of people don’t give a shit anymore .....

Unbelievable. Maybe they dont mind catching or spreading the virus or dying themselves. They're probably the same people who clapped for the NHS...

I watched the news earlier and then the Welsh news and honestly I don’t even no the rules anymore it’s so crazy. The over 65 and people at risk should stay home and everyone else should just carry on as normal. It’s going to be here forever so just get on with it

Maybe a couple of them may not be able to wear face masks due to having one of the exempt conditions such as someone relies on lip reading from them, asthma etc.

Stop jumping to conclusions. Keep your own nose in your own mask.

Difficult to believe so many people have medical conditions all at the same time and all just happen to be at the same place.. unless its pure coincidence this happens everyday..

whilst you may be correct , I was there , you weren’t , it’s my local shop and fuel station , so I certainly know of quite a few of the faces I saw , and while I’m on , your not a mod so please don’t tell me what and what not to do , thank you ......

I’m in and out of small local shops around the south all day, and can tell you about half the customers don‘t bother. And most staff don’t.

We have to keep the fear up though, Prof Robert West, SAGE consultant at UCL said on the Today programme,

“Sage said the level of concern people feel about the virus was easing....We need to ramp that back up to appropriate levels.“

But deaths and hospitalisations keep coming down.

Do we need to be as scared as many seem to be?

With respect , do you actually understand how all this works , I’m not trying to be funny by the way 👍

Any one who cannot walk slowly around in a shop wearing a mask is already nearly dead.

Lip reading? Seriously? How many?

With the lack of masks, some people think if I am just popping into a newsagent to get a paper and in the shop for a min or two, not much point in putting on a mask.

I saw my colleague serving a customer that came in with lifting his t-shirt so his nose and mouth was covered by it whilst he popped in to get some cigs.
