2019 Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) hits the UK

If it's here already it shows just how piss poor we are at managing these things, just imagine if it was really a truly devastating virus that was going about. The human race would be wiped out in no time.
No I think we're managing it well. The fact that we identified/announced it earlier than other countries who might be covering it up or not as adept, is a good thing.

I'm much more concerned with antibiotic resistant bacteria than this virus.

The thing is we don't know how many or if they have spread it to someone else.

Oh I agree, give me a virus over anything bacterial anytime.

I ain't big on conspiracies but sometimes I do wonder whether these global epidemics are man made or not......
Not a conspiracy. Coronaviruses are everywhere, especially with animals. Dubious practices can then spread certain strains to humans. Probably what happened with SARS, another coronavirus.

So possibly 'man made' in terms of our recklessness due to greed/gluttony ... just as with Mad Cow Disease/CJD. But no boogeymen/evil genius.

Ignore. Sorry :)

Anyone else hear about victims spreading the virus deliberately? Spitting on elevator buttons, doctors etc.

Not sure if this is real but if it is they should be taken out back and quietly put down.

I haven't really read up on the virus tbh but hey it's a good way to wipe out a few.

If it is spread by the consumption of animals then that's another feather in the cap for a vegan lifestyle.

I have a limited amount of official Ministry of Defence face masks for sale to forum members ;)
I realise you are joking, but for those truly paranoid among us, I recommend you go to your nearest army surplus store or ebay and buy an S10 respirator with NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) filter, should be around £50 or not much more for the mask and £10-15 for a filter. They work great. I had to help a friend clean out his blocked drains (pipes were literally clogged with human sh*t for dozens of yards) and with an S10 on I couldn't smell the drains at all.

If a virus were man-made with the intention of killing lots of people (e.g. conspiracy theories are flying that the chinese government made it for population control because the 'one-child' policy didn't work well enough) I would expect it to be far more deadly than the 2% fatality rate of coronavirus. Perhaps this is just a trial-run but I find it highly unlikely that it's man-made in the intentional sense.

You understand better than most, this is exactly correct. Fatality rate of nCoronavirus so far is around 2%, not much worse than some of the flu viruses that spread every year or so in many countries. Nothing to worry about if you're otherwise-healthy. The old and those with weak immune systems should take basic precautions.

As usual the media are over-hyping it to sell more papers, as they do with everything.
Correct. Although I do currently have a sore throat and runny nose, man flu or Coronavirus? ;)

Just seen a text on my company health & safety alert system that there is case in Camden of a contaminated ambulance. This isn't in the news yet afaik, I found out an hour ago.

Excuse me but you are putting us all in danger by posting here as I am sure I read somewhere that the virus can be transmitted via the interwebnet.:rotfl:

I've decided I'm playing it fast and loose and living on the edge.

Tonights dinner....

I'm hopeful of the antiseptic power of citrus fruits.

Well I'm not exactly worried about it, but on Wednesday I came down with a monster cold and it has been kicking my butt since.
I've not had a cold for 2 to 3 years, despite Doris and kids constantly getting them and I am not managing very well.
If I sit forward, my nose runs and I'm blowing it every couple of minutes, if I sit back then it goes down the back of my throat and I start coughing up lumps. I ache like I've done 10 rounds with Tyson and my head is splitting and my jaw is aching where my mouth is open because I can't breathe through my nose!
And I've no appetite at all.
Can't wait to get rid of it, and I presume it's just a regular cold.

This is far worse than standard flu - tens of millions of people haven't been placed into relative isolation with a massive hit to gdp for no reason. It's impossible to know exact numbers at the moment, but 9/100,000 (0.01%) deaths for flu compared to 2,000/100,000 (2%) is a large difference. Given it can spread during incubation and asymptomatically, and severe cases (around 15-30%) require intensive care treatment, the risk is that it will overwhelm healthcare services and mortality rate will shoot up. This is why they're building new hospitals within two weeks in China - it's estimated that as of 6 days ago, over 75,000 people were infected in Wuhan.

I think his point was that novel viruses can emerge in 'normal' (to us) animals under the proper conditions too
Exactly.
Unless Ste7en is going to start advocating that people in the UK need to stop eating Pork & Chicken to avoid Swine/Bird Flu...

My wife was supposed to be going to China for a conference for 10 days in March, but now they've postponed it until June. Gutted. I was looking forward to the peace and quiet.
