Titan AE In the Ice Ring
Saving Private Ryan when the Americans are lying in wait for the German tanks and infantry to attack the village, as the tanks approach you can feel the ground shaking under your feet, the anticipation as the attack is about to unfold is amazing, that whole battle up to the bridge scene at the end is awesome.
The Lord of the Rings films...you are going to be busy!
I do not have the movie but the factory scene in Road to Perdition always gets mentioned on the US sites when demos for svs subs are requested.

Good movie to mention, but there's actually another scene which is fantastic for showing off your whole system: detail, bass, dynamics etc...

Go to the scene where Hanks visits the nightclub to deliver the "note"...play this entire scene and it's fantastic, even better if it's around -5db....I swear you must be a machine if you don't jump :)

I much prefer more sustained bass rather than short loud explosions.

Nothing new, but they are all memorable:

    1) The German tanks arrival near the bridge on Saving Private Ryan.

    2) The arrival of the rescue ship near the end of Matrix Reloaded.

    3) The flapping wings of the dragon near the end of LOTR Twin Towers.

gonna show my soft cartoon loving side here but i often find them good due to the fact that the effects can be over the top as they don't need to always represent real events.

    check out:

lion king - the stampede in the canyon and some of the geysers going off in the elephant graveyard.

monsters inc - boo laughing and the big monster crossing the road

    toy story 2 intro

and obviously darla from finding nemo

    although one of my personal favourite films for bass is a slightly surprising choice in the iron giant;

there are 2 amazing scenes for any fellow svs lover namely the scene where the giant jumps in the lake and also the green ball of energy explosion towards the end (i've tried to be vague here so as not to spoil but hope it's sufficient not to **** off those who haven't seen the film whilst also making it identifiable to those that have)

I'd never seen Finding Nemo until today. My brother came round with his kids so it was a good excuse to show off the sub. Everyone keeps saying it's a tad large though (only a PB1-ISD!). Nemo is amazing! Both for sound and visuals. Are all the Pixar/cartoons like that? I might have to buy some (I'll use the excuse they're for my nephew/niece!) The bass on Nemo is fantastic and I've no idea whether my sub is set up correctly?!!!! I've ordered a meter for that, however, it sounds very discrete and puncy when it needs to be now after some adjustments.

    Other films I've tried are:
    Saving Private Ryan (obvious)
Gladiator (thought my flat was going to collapse)
    Black Hawk Down (ditto)
    Kill Bill
    Matrix
    Stereophonics live

Even the F1 ad break cuts on ITV1 come alive with the SVS!

davepuma - how do you use the meter to set up the sub?

I have a meter but if I set the sub in the same manner as all the other speakers, i.e. all to the same level, it is no-where near loud enough during the films.

Also, what is the best crossover frequency to use. I realise there will be some degree of personal taste involved, but is there a figure that the sound engineers use when encoding the discs that is 'optimum' for home 5/6.1 ?

    LOTR3

    First viewing!

The scene where Sam & Frodo run out of water on the mountain of Doom.(?)

The rumbles at that point felt like the deepest bass in the whole film. The room was shaking violently at intervals. With pressure waves felt crossing slowly. While the wooden floor was "dissolving" in spasms beneath our chairs. We looked at each other and grinned! Always a good sign. :D

Shame we were only on a low volume setting!

    Techno Freak,

I've no idea how to set it up with the meter as it hasn't arrived yet. My amp's crossover is set at 90hz and can't be changed. I currently have the crossover on the sub disabled and it sounds fine to me. I've no idea what actual difference setting up with the meter will do. If it arrives before Thursday I'll post the results.

Revisited Brotherhood of the Wolf again tonight. I had forgotten what a wonderful bass mix this disc has, together with great surround steering too.

Of the several options on the disc, DTS and French language with English subtitles is the one to go for.
