This is on the TV now on ITV, at first I thought they'd zoomed it from 2.20:1 to 16:9 (hate it when they do that), but looking closer it's obvious it's 4:3

Besides being out of order, I thought that Kubrick had a clause that TV presentations had to respect the original aspect ratio used during filming. I've seen this movie on the TV in the early 90's and it was shown in widescreen, when hardly anything else got shown that way.

    Strange.

I doubt that such a Kubrick clause exists.

2001 is shown in widescreen on TCM but not in cinemascope and have you seen the DVD of The Shining (4:3 with a mono soundtrack). Kubrick wouldn't be pleased.

Wasn't The Shining shot in 4:3 anyway? I thought it was just cropped to 1.78:1 for the cinema?

    Hi,

The Shining was always meant to be shown in 4:3 (Original Aspect Ratio), however the cinema versions always matted it to 1.78:1 (or thereabouts), resulting in a loss of picture at the top and bottom.

Also, TCM always show the longer and superior 144 minute Dicrector's Original US Version of "The Shining", whereas UK transmissions on terrestrial have always been the horrendous 119 minute UK cinema cut. Both show them, though, in the 4:3 original ratio, thank god!

I seem to remember some years ago it was shown on the BBC and of all things there was a complaint that they added stars.

Reflecting on it I could remember some scenes where the stars could be see through the spaceship.

After seeing it was broadcast on ITV I was surprised. I would think it not the 'sort' of film that they would normally show.
    More of a Channel 4 / BB2 film.

I bet there were about 5+ advert breaks in there at least?

Yes I also remember that, I think it was on 4. I thought it was strange myself as it was in 2.20:1. So perhaps that clause does exist?

That reminds me on beeb 2 the other night Wonder Boys was wider than 16:9 with black bars top and bottom it was somewhere between 2.35:1 and 1.85:1. I couldn't work out why they would do this as they show everything else 16:9. I wish more films were broadcast this way.

Wonder Boys was transmitted in full 2.35:1 which was great and it just doesnt happen often enough.

Thats the beauty of 2001, it no structure that is defined the same for any one person, you can make what you will of it, and when it does come down to the core of the film that website pretty much tells you the main theme, which could be said in simple terms as "Evolution" and "be carefull to not play god"

Foxy, I thought it was 2.35:1, but my telly still crops the broadcast left and right at 16:9 as it doesn't have a panoramic mode, which is needed on the Sonys.
