Excellent review Simon .... a STUNNING release and the nice slip case is a bonus , for once better than the steelbook !
Like you say such a landmark film and treated so special by Warner now bring on The Shining and FMJ in this quality with slips.

Good review but the film score 8/10 seems out out of keeping with the (justifiably!) gushing review? I know what the film score should be..

The packaging is perfect and Im so glad I cancelled that steelbook!

I have this, not watched it all the way through yet but it does look amazing. Probably my set up, which I'll have a look at, but I did see a lot of lip sync issues in the early parts of the film; particularly where Floyd is talking to the other scientists about what is going on, on the moon. I'd forgotten Rigsby is in this film; My god, Miss Jones, it's full of stars...

Looking forward to watching it fully, for the first time in well over a decade or more!

It never fails to surprise even now with Rigsby! A quick look at the disc confirmed everything I needed to know about the disc - astounding. A proper watch is coming up..

      8/10 for the film
      10/10 for the picture
      9/10 for the sound

      Overall: 10/10

This makes no sense to me whatsoever.

"I can understand why a modern audience, used to being spoon fed, might baulk at this film, but more fool them."

Quote of the year right there @Simon Crust Bravo.

Sounds like a proper job has been done on the restoration, this is the first release that has made me wish I had a 4k set up.

How long before someone complains about the grain, though....o_O

And come on, you can't give this film 8 out of 10. It's marmite, if you like it, it is a stone cold 10.

Tens across the board from me, easily the best 4K disc release to date.

I was fortunate to see this on first release on a giant Cinerama screen that seemed to take up the whole cinema. Blew my brains out, at such a tender age ! This is the closest experience to that time, after seeing it on all the usual formats, over the years. I remember some guys sitting in the front row, taking certain substances and tripping out ! That screen was so huge, close up. Those were the days. My only issue - and it could be due to memory fade, but the announcements over the PA in the spaceship came from the BACK of the auditorium, at the cinema. It gave the audience quite a surprise at the time, as we all thought it was the manager of the cinema speaking ! The current 4K mix is not quite the same, I believe. A fantastic disc, and my all time favourite film. Star Wars - nah..

Thanks simon. Saw this only 2 days ago on the LG C8 in Dolby Vision and it looks absolutely amazing . One of the Opening scenes in the ship when some of the cast are seated and having a discussion the picture is flawless. It is One if the best Cinematic films ever.

Just running in a new Emotiva XPA-7 and new AV pre amp, i am not sure if its the new gear but the sound is improved as i have the Blu ray with 5.1 HD Audio.

This is playing in the prince Charles cinema in Leicester Square in its full 70mm special 50th anniversary.

This is 10 in all aspects

I've only seen the 4K DV iTunes version where the black levels were absolutely horrible. Interesting that they were described as inky black in the review. Maybe I'll have to pick up the disc sometime.

I'm also baffled by the 8/10 given the content of the review. I'm sure there are 'spoonfed' films out there that have achieved 8 or higher. 8 implies it falls slightly short in one or more aspects, but they aren't mentioned. Curious.

It does rather fumble the last act. Sorry to be so controversial. :)

Agree that the PQ is incredible but I didn't find any of the space shots 'inky black' as I could easily see the black bars but have seen this mentioned a lot over the last few weeks and apparently space has always been a bit on the brighter side so its not an issue with the remaster.

I did not realise the film only got an 8. If it only got a one 10 then it should be for the film

If it were just me I would blame my TV or settings but the fact many others mentioned it too leads me to believe its just the way it was intended.

Perhaps its too dark on your fancy OLED ;)

So it was scanned in 8K resolution, now if it was released in 8K format it would really be the start of the end for high end 4K TVs and Projectors. (Although in truth it probably has already started with LG following in the footsteps of Sharp & Samsung with 8K sets, (Not forgetting JVC 8K E-Shift as well)

OT: NASA has also released 8K footage from the ISS.

To be honest, for me it is the best film ever made, it’s just so ground-breaking in so many ways; also as everybody interprets it personally it has many different meanings. (I doubt if the end chapter will ever be agreed upon as it is so way out there)

8K can wait, can you imagine the 2k DI and the 8k discs bundled Blu’s (although by then the disc will prob no longer exist :( ) with extra features on a massive 8K screen...

This disc sounds like many peoples Christmas present !

I had a quick look the other day and I don't think the space blacks were completely black - but they did look completely 'right' if that makes sense. Unlike a certain recent Star Wars film...

I cant rate it the best film ever made because I simply don't watch it that much - that might change with this new 4K release. But...its still a 10/10 film for me, one of the true classics. Im going to read The Sentinel and the 2001 book before watching the 4K disc though. If I can hold out that long... ;)

One of my favourite films. I don't have a UHD player, but tempting to get one just for this. I watched it again recently having recorded it from BBC2 HD. That was pretty good, certainly much better than my old DVD! I saw it first when it came out on a 70mm print in Leicester Square, absolutely stunning. It still outdoes most modern, overblown Holywood CGI cobblers.

I could not distinguish the black borders from the black of space on our LG B7V. Set to ISF Dark Room.

For me, this is what 4K UHD is all about. Deliver the best presentation possible for those who love their films. The discs are worth every penny.
