I was on the verge of going for the IPL sub as an upgrade. I've searched the forum and seen from people like Jag and Rob etc their experinces with the IPL sub. I am tempted.
However, There is a Q Bass for sale at £100 and as I already have one, would it be better to go for 2 of the same type?
My room is approx. 11' x 12'. Nic Rhodes' Servo 15 may well be overload. Even though I'd love one (or 2!), the wife would execute me! Other subs I know would be good/great, but this seems to be an offer worth going for. My Q Bass in its own right is a stormer. So 2 can only be better in the quality terms!
I want opinions please.

Finally, I've never connected 2 subs to an amp before. How is it done? I have a Yamaha A2, which hopefully has a dual/stereo sub out, but thought I'd ask while I'm here.
Cheers.

The General!

Go the dual sub route. It is just better.

Whilst £100 is certainly a bargain I would suggest you put it it the bank and save for something that will improve upon what you already have. Two subs will give more output but not lower bass, two RELs will have a box volume of 100 litres, go for a single box of 100L which all things being equal will give you lower bass. Alternatively, really push the boat out and sell your existing sub and buy something like the Servo 15 and be done with it, your room size isn't an issue.

Thanks for the comments above.
I do want two subs. I do notice the 'pressure loading' from the one side as it were from my sub. It never seems to be totally 'invisible' no matter where I put it.
So a second should balance everything nicely. The unbalance as it were at the moment, is more noticeable on music than cinema. It is there though, however small. The system is for AV only though, the music side is secondary.

I would have saved up for the IPL x 2 as size and money would allow it. 2 x Servo 15 would mean us watching from the hallway as we wouldn't fit in there!
However, I know what my Q Bass can do performance wise, so a 2nd would be ideal, but only because I saw it at that price! Otherwise IPL would be a definate winner.

In the futue when I can get a bigger room. I'd definately go to better subs with better performance. Don't worry Gary, I'm on the same wavelength as you, but my ability to fight off an unhappy spouse can't withstand continous assaults over years! She's happy for the Q Bass or IPL if that didn't come through, but bigger? Oh My God!

Had a look at the A2. Only has one mono sub out. So, for any dual sub people out there, how did you connect yours up? Am I looking at a splitter of some kind?

I originally wanted two Rel Storms but had to accept that I could find one when I wanted one. I went the dual servo 15 route myself (my wife is not a happy lass). The Servo is in a different league to anything else here (and just about anything I've heard) but this is not perhaps what we were talking about here originally. Dual Q would be a lovely set up, suitable for your room and very affordable.

Almost a no brainer?

see you at the event

Cheers Nic. And good morning to you.
See you there, and I'll let you dig your own hole with the women having two big subs.

How have you connected yours up please?

is it a secret of who is selling cheap rels ?

You can buy a splitter plug from maplins or Tandy for about 2 quid.

i have a splitter plug. that i bought from tandy.
Anyone know where to buy composite connectors, decent ones? Apart from tandy as the people of chelmsford clearly couldnt support tandys expenses and so have moved away from the area.

Update: I have found lektropacks do 1 connector for £3.50 + £3.00 p&p i need two so thats a tenner for two connectors!!!

I would too be inclined to buy the 2nd Rel. Whilst obviously a sub's LF response is finite in using two you will indeed perceive "a deeper output". I have spent many hours/days/weeks devoting myself to the science of low frequencies (i am in the very fortunate position to own two Rel Storms and a Servo 15) and have found that all things being equal there are some reasonably hard and fast rules in employing sub's. Regardless of driver/amp size or the (anechoic recorded) frequency response of a given unit pretty much the definig factor in low frequency performance is the room itself, whilst careful positioning can help/hinder the room's effects you will find that there is only so much you can do and the rest you will have too live with. By far and away the best thing you can do to improve LF performance is too add a second sub (preferably the same as the 1st) and pretty much for 99% of the time (IMHO) i would tend to dispute above advice of 1 larger sub is "better" than 2 smaller subs unless your room is tiny. It's all about "smoothing" the room out, geting rid of the "holes" in your room and LF response and trying to calm the peaks (which IMHO are the more offensive) rather than an SPL issue. Whilst a single larger sub will give a lower response it will still be susceptable to exactly the same peaks and troughs as a single small sub, far far better to have an even, smooth response and then in time perhaps add something else later. In using 2 Rel Storms i have lived in both (again IMHO) a musical and HC subbass euphoria and only very recently added the Servo 15 (used at it's lowest cut-off point 35hz) to give me the "scare-factor" 15-25hz that i felt (literally) was missing.
Have 2 (then 3 and 4 etc) sub's - you'll wonder how you did without them.

Well, the Q Bass was sold 2 days ago. So what next?
IPL?

No secret. It's 2nd hand.
If it were new I'd buy loads and flog them to you.

Cheers Phil.

IPL was No. 1 on my list anyway until I saw the Q Bass at £100.
I was going to post and ask all you lot that have had an IPL for a while, what you think of it. Any long term niggles cropped up etc?

General.
Use the "show topics form the last...days" bar to get to the 8th of july for an honest IPL vs Rel "thing".

I would General, as you'll probably aware I have one and for the money it's very good value. Also I believe SteveX put it against his storm3 and in his opinion there was not much difference in HC, good to have someone who can listen to two products side by side and post an answer.

Lovely. Cheers Phil. I did read all the past IPL related links. Good tips for the construction side of it. Don't worry, I'm a dab hand at MDF now. After many a curse at 'over engineering' the screws.
I'm just about to receive my new centre speaker, literally (hopefully) Thursday/Friday. So my next save and spend will be a sub. IPL is as I said no.1 option. I guess a month or two/three. Depends on what I have to pay in spouse appeasment first.
The silicon sealant is a good tip. How well made on a scale of 1 -10 are the MDF panels? Ie, perfect fit or a touch of planing/sanding req.?
Also, how easy did you find personally it was to fit the veneer?
How long to build in real time? Ie, drying time etc for glue etc?

Cheers in advance.

Hi General,
On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd say mine was an 8, not perfect but easy to to sort, you sound an experienced man so I'm sure you'll be fine, or you could buy the MDF and have it cut for you as long as you can have the cut outs done aswell. If you bought scraps it would be cheaper as they'll set you back about £40, check cutting price first though. My mate just bought one and without the MDF it cost £245 incl p/p.(I've ad a beer or two... no change there then.. so I'll go on and on etc.)Sorry to say I have no experience with the veneer, for now mine is covered in some imitation shiny wood vinyl, which is nice.I intend to cover it in wooden floor panels, cut to fit.I've just completed a pair of his M3tl transmission line speakers and I intend to finish these the same but will practice on the sub first.

General,
I've had mine many months now without any problems. I glued and screwed mine together(please note: DO NOT overtighen screws if you use them or the MDF will split)and as I put it together I used decorators silicon on the internal edges and around the cone mount once it was in position. It will help also if you enlarge the screw lock nut hole(internal 5/6mm deep) so the lock nut can be tapped in.Also instead of the supplied feet I screwed on very small casters as I have remove it from vase and ornament support purposes to use it.I have the sub connected mono to my yam e800, crossover approx 200hz, the volume(gain) at 9.15 (am I a wimp) hammer time, sometimes a tad more if i feel the need. Any questions or help please ask if you do go ahead.
