Dolby True HD is multi channel but some players have not implemented the multi channel decode yet. It is actually designed to be downmixed quite easily without quality loss.

Quality wise, it is basically MLP as used on DVD-A. So, assuming the master is up to scratch and it is encoded at decent bit length and rate, it will be on a par with DVD-A.

There are very strong hints from Amir (Microsoft) that the next firmware version for the Tosh HD-DVD players will implement 5.1 Dolby TrueHD. There are other rumours that the firmware update will be out this week

Most of the HD-DVDs that feature TrueHD are encoded at 16 bits, 48Khz. This is very close to the 16 bits, 44.1kHz sampling rate used on CD. So the sound quality is actually very similar to CD.

There is one Japanese HD-DVD encoded at 24 bits, 96kHz. 24/96 is far superior to CD audio. Unfortunately the audio takes up so much space on the disc that the video quality is impacted.

It would be nice to see more 20/48 or 24/48 tracks on HD-DVD as this would not add a significant overhead in terms of disc space while still being better than CD.

TrueHD sound is compresed lossless? otherwise truHD @ 16bit/48khz does not equal CD at similar.

Training Day is 24/48 according to WinDVD HD

Yes. Dolby TrueHD is a lossless codec. It's based on MLP (Meridian Lossless Packing), used on DVD-Audio releases.

Interesting. Can you confirm the bits per sample/sample rate for any other releases?
