I've been using 2 Rotel power amps (in bridged mono) to run the front speakers on my system. In a moment of boredom i decided to try running the centre channel through one of them and noticed there are 2 centre pre-outs on my Yamaha amp.

Why are there 2? Is it so I can run 2 centre speakers?

Yes it is so you can run 2 centre speakers, although this seems funny its sometimes better to have 2 centres if you have a large screen e.g. spreads the sound more evenly across the screen than 1 speaker can. I guess it would only really matter on widescreens 46" or bigger.

Running two centres can have all sorts of problems with acoustic cancellations and can be difficult to set up properly, best avoided to be honest.

A decent centre speaker (or speaker that matches the front pair), setup properly should be all you need.

Cheers for the replies. Cant say i've any need to run 2 centres with my miniscule TV. But at least now I know.

Just out of curiosity... what would happen if I took one pre-out into the power amp's left channel and the other into the power amp's right channel and ran the power amp in normal stereo mode?

You can use it to biamp the speaker, perhaps a good idea for your center: use the two pre-outs and wire one terminal of the center speaker to the L out of the poweramp and the other one to the R out. Given of course your center allows biwiring/amping.
