I'm looking to buy a good 19" TFT monitor with DVI input for gaming and general use.
I've been searching for a while but not found my perfect monitor yet. Can anyone suggest anything?

    samsung 191T is superb @ £500 ish.

DVI + analog inputs - great picture quality - perfect for movies, though not quite fast enough for games really - though its not a real problem.

Its a superb monitor, i wouldnt hesitiate to buy samsung kit, i have 2 17" from them (samsung are rediculously large now, make all the screens themselves etc... warranty seems good i know someone who had a problem, and had a recon sent as repacement no questions)

I had looked at the Samsung already, but I had heard complaints from serious gamers that the 191T was'nt great.
I should try and get a demo of it really as it does like like a nice monitor.

Just been looking at the Samsung SM193T.
Is that the newer version of the 191T?

no idea - you should stilll be able to get the 191t if you look around though. IMO a great monitor. Though if gaming is your thing you should get a newer TFT, or a CRT.

That said my 171P's are advertised as 25 ms delay (which by most peoples reckoning is too slow) and they absolutely love games. Cant fault them at all.

best thing as you say is to have an audition. PC world will let you take one home to test if you ask nicely enough (tell them you want to see it with your graphics card) - and beleive it or not, they really are VERY competitive in terms of pricing over internet traders.

I think they are doing sterling work for the high street :) ( i have absolutely no affiliation, just very impressed with them in general)

Hmm, I really do like the look of the Samsung, but responses like those here have put me off a little.
How hard can it be to find my perfect monitor? I've set my self a budget up to £600 and it's proving much harger than I thought!:(

Stella, yeah thats what i heard about my monitor too. I am *really* picky about these things, but there really isnt noticable artifacts at all - occaisionally you can see a streak when you pan a dark area to light, but in all honesty you have to look for it - its not off putting.

Its why i say PC world, if you pipe up some chat theyll let you take it home and test it there. Problem solved, if you dont like it, return it within 2 weeks, if you do, keep it.

sod all the reviews, just see for yourself.

oh yeah, and as a side, i would never buy a 19" - i was looking seriously at the 191T, but then thought sod it, and bought 2 17" TFT's (with a better screen, these are the porche designed samsung screens ;) ) for like £40 more than 1 19.

Its up to you, but i think that 17" is the best value screen. Get a 17, and treat yourself to a new amp aswell......... though if you really want a 19 then go for it.

I have a 17" Formac TFT which I'm thoroughly impressed with. I bought it mainly for its colour accuracy (for graphic design) but have been using it for video editing, gaming and watching the occasional DVD. No problems what so ever.

They do 19 and 20 inch versions too. 17" with an ADC connector was £450 odd.

The Hercules Prophetview 920 Pro is a 17" monitor that looks ideal for gaming with a 20ms response.
This monitor does'nt seem to have dvi though. I don't use dvi at the moment on my 19" crt but I thought if I'm spending the money I may as well try for a bit of future proofing.
    How important is DVI really?

Just found this Neuvo LCD at this Neuvo LCD
It looks superb with a response of 10 to 15 ms.
Got me thinking about the size thing though. They do a good 17" and it's about £200 cheaper.

    Hi Barrie,
aria.co.uk regularly do a deal for the day on a DELL 17-inch TFT at about £209. They seem to sell out within hours though, I didn't decide in time first time I saw it.

    It's got a high 1280x1024 native resolution.

If I remember rightly the response time was fine and it's been used for editing captured video and I didn't notice any smearing.

I've had one for about a 6 weeks now.

It's got no DVI input though, only VGA, but it is very, very sharp and stable off my GeForce 2 GTS desktop PC.

    regards,
    Rob.

Ok I think we're getting somewhere now.:)
A slight change in direction. I'm looking at saving a couple hundred quid and getting a 17" which is only an inch diagonally smaller than my crt.
I have looked in to the Samsung 172 and am very impressed with the reviews. I have narrowed my search down now to the Samsung and the Iiyama Prolite E431S. At Aria.co.uk they claim that this is the best gaming tft in the world and boasts a low 16ms screen. It retails at about £330 which appears to be about £50 cheaper than the Samsung.
Who's going to have the deciding post?:D

of iiyamas i have seen they are not a very saturated display (Although i havent seen this model) - my samsung has vivid colours.

it comes down to preference really - try and find a shop with one in goddamit (and yes, £200 less for a still big screen is my point exactly)

at least progress has been made ;)

Stu, in the review I read on the 172T they refered to some ghosting which they managed to iliminate through messing with the settings. Did you have to do this with yours? What is adjustable on this monitor to make ghosting less obvious?

i got an older 171P display, i mean, yeah, you can see *some* ghosting, but does it matter? No.

Its not like a sheeat TFT where its streakarama as in the old days. Occaisionally, youll see streaking on my screen, but the beneifts of TFT WAY, and i mean WAY beat having a CRT screen.

as i say, have a play, and see what you think, you only need to go outside and go to a shop. The real world isnt that scary is it?

I just double checked the back, it's the 17" Dell E171FPB listed as 25ms currently £279+VAT in their normal page.

It's on http://www.aria.co.uk/DealforToday.asp that it appears for the £209+VAT price. I'd bet it's up there one day within the week, apparently not today though.

I'd certainly prefer 1280x1024 res over 1024x768 on a 17 dor windows surfing, etc. Mind you, can your 3d card run games at 1280x1024. If it's 1024x768 I think, the panel scales it up to full-screen.

Still if you need 16ms, then you need 16ms.

[edit: I'll install the UT2003 demo to test, I don't usually bother with pc games much these days, more the X-box/PS2 on the PJ]

It looked ok with UT at 1280x1024 and I tried 800x600 which also looked fine. There may have been some minor loss of detail when panning around, certainly nothing that looked like ghosting though. It's been 6 months since I last played it, using my old 17-inch CRT.

I did notice some tearing. I'm not sure if that the Geforce2 Vsync setting being off or the panel. I couldn't find the Vsync option in the Nvidia control panel?

    regards,
    Rob.

I think I'm going to go for the Samsung. I'm just trying to decide between the 172T or the 192T. I think the bigger one would look especially cool wall mounted above my desk.:D
I'm going to have look round Portsmouth today and see if there's anything to demo in the shops. If not I'll be making my mind up and ordering later this afternoon.
I appereciate all your comments guys. Keep em coming I've not taken the plunge yet!!!;)

I've gone for the 19" in the form of Samsung's 192T.
I was surprised to find that digiuk have'nt got any and have been waiting for sometime, so I've purchased it from Ebuyer.com for £549.29 (inc. shipping)
The delivery date is Friday and I can't wait. Hope I'm not dissappointed.

It might be worth giving these people a ring
    DIGI UK
They seem to have all the Samsung range on their web site and claim to be an authorised dealer. It doesn't say if they have them in stock or not.
I've never used them before, but they claim to hold huge stocks in their warehouse.

    Just found this interesting link
I've just tried comet and they don't expect any 192T's in for at least a couple of weeks. I can see where the writers of this page are coming from!
