    Hi

Can anyone please help? I'm on the verge of ordering a DVD Recorder and the main purpose of this will be to back up from my Sky + Hard Drive.

As a lot of this will be football, I'm keen that the recordings are made in the widescreen format. Based on some of the previous posts, I'm a bit confused by which players can do this.

In addition, I've heard that there will be soon be recorders available which can record sound in 5.1.

Can anyone point me in the right direction with these points?

    Thanks

All recorders beit DVD or VHS will record whatever the source is.
It's just the 'ws flag' that doesn't get recorded to DVD-R.
It does with DVD RAM but not sure on th eother formats.

Same goes for VCRs, although it depends on the model whether the flag is recorded.

Either way the omission of the flag only means you have to change the TV manually. It has no bearing on the actual picture content that is recorded (which is all 4:3 anyway, squashed or unsquashed!).

Sorry, can't help on the 5.1 query.

Philips have plans to launch a DVD recorder with 5.1 capability later this year.

If this is going to be for EURO 2004, then it doesn't matter - it's going to be transmitted in 4:3 only :D

All recordings and transmissions are at 4:3. If the original is widescreen it is squashed horizontally and sent with a flag telling the tv to stretch it out again when it is displayed so that the aspect ratio is correct. This flag is usually lost when recording to dvd requiring the tv to be manually switched into widescreen mode.
