15m HDMI or HDMI over IP?

Hope someone can advise, I have looked through the forums but still can't decide which is best way to go!

I have Sky HD in the living room and want to send it to my new LED TV in the bedroom, cable run up to 15m.

At the same time I am going to run CAT cable to the bedroom for the PC.

Should I use an HDMI splitter in the living room between the Sky box and TV and then run 15m HMDI cable to bedroom, would I need an extender (if so which is recommended?)

Or should I use CAT5 or 6 to send the HDMI signal to the bedroom?

I am sure lots of people must have a similar setup and hopefully will share their wisdom.:lease:

Thanks in advance

Hello Gordon

You can send 1080i50 from SKY HD over a 15m HDMI cable - you can also send 1080p60 from a BD player if you choose the correct cable!

At 15m you cant get a High Speed certified cable - though lots of folk will confirm it is possible to successfully run 1080p60 over some Standard Speed cables.

HDMI over IP is different technology to HDMI over CATx Extenders!

HDMI over CATx extenders is the more likely alternative for you - I'd use dual runs of CAT6 if you want the best future proofing.

Lots of options for you to consider:

HDMI 1x2 Splitter - Media Factory - Octava HDDA12-UK, 1x2 HDMI distribution amp.

HDMI over CATx Extender (with IR return) - Media Factory - Octava HDOCAT, HDMI + Optical 5.1 over CAT5 Extender inc. IR Passthru

15m amplified HDMI cable (Standard Speed) - Media Factory - Bettercables HIgh Speed CAT2 HDMI cables, 1m to 12m.

Hi Joe

Thanks for the info, I am leaning towards using CAT6 as you suggest as it is nice and easy to work with and gives extra flexibility for the future.

Will my Sky HD box use both the CAT6 cables on the extender or is 1 for future proofing?

If I go the CAT6 route I assume I would need the following:

CAT6 transmitter and receiver
HDMI splitter
3 short HDMI cables

Is that correct?

Cheers

The Extender will use both of the CAT6 cables - add a third if you want wired IP connectivity between the rooms.

Assuming you already have 1 x HDMI cable then yes your kit list looks correct.

Last thing I hope!

I was thinking about the splitter and although I only have a SKY HD box at the moment I am likely to add a Blu Ray player and possibly other things in the future, so I suppose I should delete the splitter and add a matrix? correct?

Thanks for everyone's help

Finally got all the wires through the walls etc and something just isn't correct!

I am getting no signal message at the TV for the connected HDMI 1 connector, tried switching round the rj45 connectors on the extender and it then told me to check connections.

Should the CAT 6 cable be terminated 568B on both ends (straight through cable) This is what I did but perhaps it should have been wired as 568B/568A (crossover cable)

I looked through the docs and on the website but can't find a reference to it.

Hope someone can help today or I'll call the retailer on Monday.

Thanks

Gordon:confused:

OK I hold my hand up to not doing the job right!

I went back to all the connections and found a damaged wire at one of the connectors, it's all working now.

I feel a bit stupid but in case anyone else wants to know the cable should be terminated 568B at both ends.

Good to hear you got it sorted - lots of folk get the cable termination wrong!!!

Yeah but I shouldn't have, I have done lots of RJ45 terminations.

Must have nicked the wire when cutting the outer sheath.

Anyway the wife is happy now and that's all that matters.
