1366 vs 768 1080i vs 720p

I know that 1080i vs 720p has been done to death but I am wondering how these compare when the set is in effect only a native 720p.

My question is if a TV only has 768 lines vertically surely choosing 1080i is going to involve some downscaling by the TV and therefore would 720p be the best option?

yes, in effect otherwise you would be viewing a downscaled 1080i to 720i
