I was thinking of getting a secondhand i3, but even then the price is quite high. Think the styling is great

I did 14K miles in the Leaf for 2 years, living with a range of 60 miles in winter without ever having to use any public charging, except on a few odd occasions.

The few times I did try I was met with the same frustration as what some newer EVers are finding.

In the ideal world I would agree, a 'seamless' charging method where you simply put in your card details and thats it would be perfect. But sadly we are a long way from that, and things haven't got any better since 2015:(.

we should just have charge points in public places that have contactless card payment and clear pricing on them. Sorted.

Precisely. We clearly cannot rely on individual businesses to collectively produce a good solution (not just in this context, but in a far broader world); everybody wants their own little proprietary thing, and they don't have the collective intelligence to realise that their parochialism is only serving to stifle their own very business.

ICE users go to any brand of fossil fuel station, we insert a standard shape/size nozzle into a standard shape/size hole and we fill up; and we pay with a bank card of some sort. No app, no membership, no fee.

And the EV networks had to re-invent that. Doh!

The great thing about EV is you can 'refuel' them from anywhere within reach of 3 pin plug. The dedicated home chargers are useful absolutely, but given most of the time cars are parked up sitting around doing nothing a normal 3 pin plug will do just as nicely in a lot of situations!!

The Leaf will charge at over 3KW over a 3 pin plug which is more than quick enough, especially overnight. We are visiting my parents this weekend, drove up to London yesterday, didn't need to charge the Tesla as I was going to supercharge on the way home, but than I thought why not plug in anyways. Even at a lowly 2KW charging, through the day it's pulled enough charge to mean we probably don't even need to stop on the return trip :)

....before anyone askes about pedestrians tripping etc, use to do this with the Leaf overnight and never had any issues.

For people who have ordered their Pod Point, did you order the one with the "tethered charging cable" or the "Universal Socket"?

I've got tethered but it means I can't charge a LEAF off it so I think maybe socket is more sensible.

Is that because you have a BMW i3 so PodPoint fitted a cable that fits an i3 but not a Leaf? If so, I think I'll go with the Universal Socket in case I switch makes in the future.

We went tethered. On the (perhaps erroneous) assumption we can get an adaptor or change the plug on the cable if we move to another make. Seems a bit of a faff to have to connect the cable at both ends every time we want to charge. Assuming that's how it works.

I gather Universal ones don't come with a cable so you either use the one in the car or get another one.

Looks like a face lift until a brand new model in 19/20. Personally its probably a good idea with the way and speed the EV/battery market is changing. Refresh and then see what future battery technology brings.

Am not aware of any Type 2 to Type 1 connector on sale. You can change the whole lead without too much problems later by opening up the unit.

I went with a universal version back in 2015 because I knew at some point I was going to swap the Leaf for a Tesla and both have different connectors. Plugging in a untethered lead takes 10 seconds longer. But I'm in the process of organising/changing to a tethered charger as the Tesla isn't going to be leaving the family for a long time (if ever).

    I'm untethered.

I wanted a 10m cable for ICE-breaking anyway and it has been very useful on a number of occasions. The standard length cable that came with the car now stays permanently in my home charger.

How much did that put you back? the 10m cable that is, if I may ask.

Not for me. I typically get about 15 kWh from a rapid charge. That's 5.60 in total.
