12 inch sub driver. Ruark-peerless perhaps?

lo gents. I recently decided to re-employ my trusty Ruark LogRhythm sub.

But... in the process I rammed a screwdriver through the cone and surround. The bloody pain!!

So I’m now in need of a new driver. I’ve no idea what the original was as it has no name or number on it that make sense to google. But it is a heftyish twin magnet 12 inch fellow.

I was hoping something like this might suffice as a replacement?

    Peerless 830669 SLS-315 12" SubWoofer Speaker

I’d just rather buy a Bk xxl200 but there’s no cash in the pot as yet so I’m stuck with finding a driver.

I’d seriously appreciate any help. Thank you.

Might be worth giving Ruark a call, they've always been very helpful in my experience and may even have some old drivers, worth a try.

Hmmm... I thought they had expired. I’ll try them tomorrow. Cheers.

They are still going strong, they moved away from speaker manufacturing a few years ago and decided to concentrate on home audio/lifestyle products, rebranded to Ruark Audio.
A few years back I was after an upgrade on my Ruark Vita 100 sub, I was after the more powerful/bigger version. They had one in the warehouse that was kind of New old stock, which they let me have at a very reasonable price.
For what it's worth if you don't get any luck with them, give Tom at BK Elelectronics a call as they manufactured a lot of their subs and can probably advise you.

I’ve looked around but as don’t know the make or model number of the driver it’s difficult to find a kit.

I emailed a couple of repairers but no one has replied yet. And also, if the peerless will work, it will probably, at £76, work out about the same price as a recone.

Had a chat with Tom at BK Electronics who built the subs.

What a thoroughly helpful and nice fellow

It seems the driver was made by Audax.

And naturally I can’t find one.

    Ruark have been excellent.

They don’t make anything like the LogRhythm now, nor have they for years.

But Neil there has been very helpful. He’s trying to find out the exact model driver used or a suitable replacement driver.

    Top chap.

As have Wilmslow. They can’t get hold of the Audax (no one can it seems anymore) driver but they’re happy to help source a replacement.

Cheers Shane. You were quite correct.

Both Ruark and BK have been very helpful.

It seems that the driver is an Audax HT300PG.

I couldn’t find that out. Neil from Ruark did for me.

(I have to thank Ruark publicly here; they’ve been exceptionally helpful.)

I’ve searched the web from top to bottom as far as my skills in that direction allow, but even those with old stock Audax drivers don’t have one.

A split second with a screwdriver and carpal tunnel can cause all sorts of sh*t. :suicide:

Still looking for an as close as possible replacement driver if anyone here has in-depth subwoofer know-how please?

Even when I can afford a BK 400 I’d still like to keep the Ruark. It’s (was) a great sub, and it’ll work well with my Trios too when I retire it from front room duties.

Anybody know of a good repair centre for big drivers then?

This thread doesn’t seem interesting to many... :D

Nevertheless... i bodged the driver by gluing a piece of shaped card to the rear 2 inches or so around the tear. And by gluing a couple of bicycle puncture repair patches to the damage on the rubber surround.:rotfl:

Then I found that the amp was rogered.

Only a snapped wire from the transformer though. So... a swift soldering and some new air seal and I whipped it into place.

Just to see if it worked well enough to test whether or not it added anything to my Adams using the DiracLive minidsp.

Oddly enough, it does. Work that is.

And yes, the DiracLive makes the idea of a sub indispensable now.

So I need to decide either on a new peerless driver for 80 quid and a possible loss of quality from the original Aurax, or get some cash for a new sub from BK.

I have another question if anyone can help? Whilst removing the driver I found what seems to be remnants of white, light fluffy sound absorbent stuff. Only remnants though.

Should subs have internal sound deadening? Or is it decided on a design by design basis?

I very much doubt that the peerless driver would amount to a loss of quality; if anything it most likely will be an upgrade.

As to your other question, buy some cheap foam from ebay and give it a go with or without. Whichever sounds best to you will be your solution.

    Thanks for the reply.

I think I’ll go for the peerless. It’s less than £100 delivered so why not?

I’ve then decided that I’ll get a pair of the P12 300s from BK and the repaired Ruark can join my Trios in room number 2.

    Cheers.
