Janet and myself were bought 1 year passes to Colchester Zoo for Christmas so with the nice weather on Saturday made our first use of them, great thing is that we can now just pop in whenever we have a free hour or so, and I can concentrate more on individual animals.

Anyway here are a few from Saturday, some of you may remember my recent Lion shot, here is a few more of the same chappie

1 - Black and white conversion

    2 - Full mane showing

3 - Up close and personal - 10mm of glass between life and lunch !

4 - Next area is the Fennec Fox who was sleeping

5 - Next to the fox was the Sandcat's winter quarters, this is slightly out of focus but I like it, not cropped !

6 - Little Goat was a bit of fun

While there I met a really nice chap from abroad, noticed a decent Nikon set up and started chatting, he was using a Sigma 70 - 200 F2.8 on a D70 body, this - or the Nikon equivilant are very much in my radar at the moment. He let me attach it to the D50, wow it was heavy but felt really good, unfortyunately the Lions moved off so only shots were distant so nothing suitable to publish but - I WANT ONE !

    Very nice!

I assume you were struggling for light with the sandcat (hence DOF probs?), but I rather like it as well
The B&W lion has come out rather well too

I can't resist posting some more fennec fox and sandcat cuteness!...

Obviously I was having reflection problems on the bottom two, but he was sooo cute (and grumpy and half asleep!). 105VR macro incidentally

I'll have to get out there again myself once the weather improves a bit.

    Hi ya

Biscuit Like the B&W conversion, but not sure if its this screen but looks a little dark.

Are these taken behind glass, if so you have done well.

I can see you having fun with that Sandcat.

    there...feel better now *sigh*

Perhaps us Essex folks should have a Colchester Zoo meet sometime. That poor sandcat will REALLY have something to be grumpy about

Holowlegs...yeah the sandcat, fennec fox and lion, tamarind and otter are behind glass. I certainly had to play with the curves to get the contrast up.

The Fox and sandcat are in the nocturnal house, in truly rotten lighting, so I reckon Biscuit deserves a medal (I was kinda cheating with f2.8 VR hardware)

A meet at the Zoo would be a great idea.

Thanks for your kind words, yes the lion shots were through glass using my Sigma 70 - 300 APO as was the Sadcat and Fennec Fox shots. All handheld, had the monopod but did not use it all day.

For some reason this trip was not as good photographically as my last one in October, perhaps I was comparing these with the last ones too much.

By the way Yandros, superb shots, especially the little monkey.

Biscuit, picture 3 would be an absolute masterpiece if you cloned out the shadow of the glass from the lions mane. Nice one.

Took the family to Colchester Zoo today for my youngest son's 4th birthday.

As I promised myself that I would post more images on here, I thought I'd put a couple up, as I'm quite happy with these two..
