Max size of USB is usually 5M but you can buy repeaters, they are like leads with single port hubs on the end. I have one but is does not work consistantly sometimes you have to re-insert the plug to get it to detect the device on the other end. Perhaps newer devices are better.

As Paul says, if you go over 5M you can have problems. It might be worth trying a repeater though, but it depends what you are going to stick on the end of the usb cable I think.

FWIW, I have a 5 metre USB extension into which I have plugged a USB/PS2 convertor and on the end of that there is a mouse and keyboard.
Total length is about 7.5m and it works fine.

Thanks for the advice, basically the set up i have involves a
media center pc in my office and plasma set up in living room,The plasma runs SVGA from the pc and at present im using a IR booster to control media center. What I would like to do is run a usb cable from pc to living room (approx 10-12m cable run),this would mean the IR reciever for the pc would hopefully be much more reliable than it is now (ie about 50% hit rate!) plus i would be able to add a hub at the end of the extension lead to conect a keyboard of digi camera quickly and surf net or watch pictures directly from living room.I know i can get a cordless keyboard but I tried a RF one and it was useless as there are 3 walls between the rooms(probally explains why IR repeater doesnt work either.

Is there no way of relocating the media PC so it is either in the lounge or closer to the plasma?
I moved my PC from one end of the study to the other and shortened the run by about 3 metres so I was able to get away with a 5m USB cable.

Afraid not,I allready moved my office around to get the shortest run possible (ie pc right against wall, hole drilled through 2 further walls to living room) and as i work from home also having pc in living room just wouldnt be practical which was initally my other idea.Think I may just bite the bullet and by 2 leads with the extender and hope for the best, its just alot of money and hassle if it wont work

It should only be about £10-£15 to see if it works.
My 5m USB extension was about £4 from Ebay (Quay Computers).

I've a feeling you'll struggle to put a hub on the end of that length and still get reliable connections, but hopefully you will prove me wrong ;)
