My new house has a 10 foot lounge (as in from the wall i'd put the plasma to the wall id put th sofa) - so i guess when sitting down on the soaf this means it'll be a 8 footish viewing distance roughly.....
Do you think 42 inch plasma would be too big?

Definately go 42", it'll look huge for a week or so and then look surprisingly small. Until you visit a friend with a 28" crt

Definately 42" - you will reget not buying one, its not as though they are thousands more expensive.

I was all set to get the 37in cos the Wife said 42 was to big,but now I've read this thread,I'm back to thinking 42 may be the way to go?

The lounge is 13ft wide X 23ft long, and we sit about 10/12 ft from the screen,so I guess it will be OK.
    Thanks
    Alan

I would go with the 37".

Going with the biggest isn´t always the best choice. It has to fit in the room and you have to be able to see the picture all at once without moving your eyes or even your head.

    Depends on..
1 If you are an AV nut (like most here)and want to create a home cinema experience then bigger the better (you would never complain to the cinema manager that the screen is too big for the room ) if a plasma is installed properly and all the wires are hidden then a big plasma especially panel models can look tidier than a smaller all in one plasma set with wires showing

2 If you want to have a designer looking home with a trendy flat screen but are more bothered about the overall look of the room and If you only watch a bit of telly and don't watch DVD films or sports there seems little point in getting a massive plasma.

neither is right neither is wrong just horses for courses.

I really feel a quality install of a panel only plasma can make the screen seem really small when switched off but give you the big screen many yearn for when you watch anything on it.
a few years ago i fitted a 42 PW4 wall mounted with sound provided all round by KEF's in wall reference speakers which were painted the same colour as the walls All the components were hidden in a cupboard and were still remote controlable .This was a very discrete installation but it really performed. a 37" viera on a stand would have looked much bigger in the same room and with poorer sound BUT of course that sort of installation costs much more.

Just by having a posh flat screen means you're a chav, innit mate??

And more so if you is a Chelski "supporter"...

    I have a 12 foot lounge with a 50" PDP - looks great even at 3 feet.

I sometimes wish I'd gone for the 50" but the you have to weigh up whether the extra cash is worth it. I sit around 9 feet away and the 43" seems perfect but would be interesting to see a 50".

I think the choice between 37 or 42/43 is a no brainer - has to be 42/43 in the type of room suggested.

Check out this article. Looks like it should definitely be a 42" (or maybe a 50"? :D )

I have a 37in in a similar room and am relieved I did not go for bigger. Unless they are really using a lot of bandwidth I spend a lot of time cursing the lack of detail in Freeview and SKY. This does not happen with DVDs and hopefully won't with HDTV. I think getting a standard def 42in set in such a room would be silly, unless you have really bad eyesight anyway!

s'pose a 50" pdp is safer bet. Harder to lift!
