I figured this was the best place to ask for advice on this. I have a patio door 1.8 meters wide by 2.2 meters tall. The blind isn't required for projecting onto, rather to just do what it's intended to do so can anyone recommend a place where I could purchase said item?

The evenings are getting lighter and my pj's getting concerned it wont be used as much :D . The blind is to cover a west facing door so as you can imagine the sun (when it's around) just blasts through the length of the lounge in the late evening and in turn is making my viewing times occur later and later :( .

Cheers

Ikea, I dont think the drop is enough but what I did was.

I bought one of the correct width and one of the shortest width they do (both the longest drop). After fitting the wide one in place I cut a strip the correct width and about 12" from the smaller blind and attached this to the bottom of the other one with velcro.

I also used velcro down either side of the blind from top to bottom to make sure no light gets in, you can buy velcro from B&Q by the meter (it is self adhesive on the non velcro side).

Cheers for that Mike, certainly one to consider. Doesn't the velcro add to the size of the rolled up blind? I'd imagine by quite a bit, or not?

Clint.

Yes it does and I can't roll it all the way up, but as it is a dedicated cinema room that is not a problem for me. You could put bits of velcro at certain distances rather than the along the whole drop.

I have a patio door and got a custom-made blackout roller-blind from a small local shop specialising in blinds. (For the other smaller window I bought the take-away version of the same blind and trimmed it to size myself - wish I'd paid extra for them to cut it because I didn't cut it very straight.)

(Shop was "City Blinds", 273 Hackney Road, Bethnal Green, London. However if you are not in London I don't think there was any magic involved, any local specialist should be able to do it for you. I found the usual shops (B&Q etc.) useless, as was the web.)

I found a WEB based blackout blind supplier a while back, can't remember who it was. Need to sort this out myself now that BST is messing with my big screen enjoyment!

JohnWH, think hard... who was it? I'd be very interested should you remember.

I'm not in a dedicated room so I'll need it to tuck nicely out the way when not in use.

Cheers

Not sure how much you wish to spend or if this sugestion will help, but you could look into fitting a commercial blackout blind. I looked into this myself last year but it was a bit expensive I am sure the company operated out of Ireland but can't remember their name. Here is a company I found on the net that stocks a similar product.

Cheers foghorn, I've emailed them for a quote.

I have found a different blackout option. Not quite as cheap as rollers, but worth considering. Never seen this suggested on any forum before !

My Patio door is 2.33 m wide x 2.06m high. My screen drops down in front of the door. but there are large gaps at the bottom (of course) and at each side. With the summer coming, my temporary pin up blackout material solution needs to be replaced.

The opening is too large for 'off the shelf' blackout roller blinds (custom ones would need a steel core, probably 3" dia).

Two narrow rollerblinds leaves the gap dor the middle and the velcro solution would be too 'thick'.

I considered blackout vertical blinds and eventually found a drop down blind that can be close cut to the opening to reduce light leakage (in fact I will be using white aluminium 'L' sections to form a neat side 'track').

The blinds are Luxaflex(R) Duette(R) 25mm wide honeycombe material in various colours with an aluminium foil internal backing so they are 'blackout'. Really neat, unusual, and much better than a 2.3m wide roller.

Take a look at www.luxaflex.com for information, but beware, these are not cheap (on the web) in fact dont look for a quote on the web because you will gasp !.

I got mine from a local supplier (here in Warwick) who was much more competitive - more than a roller or vertical but much better in my situation.

Might be worth keeping in mind for that neat solution where you can afford to spend a bit more / want a neater solution than rollers (i dont like rollers !)
Good Luck

Just search for "black out blinds" in google!

Random one picked from list - www.rollerblinds.com, seem to cover the dims you're after. Lots of other places listed if you're after something a bit more flashy...

You can buy 'blackout' lining for ordinary curtains, assuming you have curtains up at the moment? It's actually a light beige colour, and does the job well. I got mine from John Lewis at about £4 / sq metre. Of course you need someone who good at sewing...lucky I managed to rope my sister into making the curtains

Do Ikea do the Tuplar blind in the size I need? I haven't been there for a while, if they do then I'll be straight down there. :D

I made some enquiries into the Luxaflex blinds and they wanted silly money (£170ish) so that's a no go :( .

JohnWH, rollerblinds wanted about £130 for the size required. Again, couldn't bring myself to pay that kind of money.

Clint,

I use a 2m wide white Tuplar for my screen and have a smaller black version to black-out my basement window - does the job really well.

I can't recall how long the 2m wide version is, but IIRC it seemed pretty long (might be 2m x 2m though...). You can cut down the blind to 180cm wide if you need to.

Cheers,
Joel

Hi Clintc,

Thats what I meant in my original post, the width will be fine it is the drop (height) that is too short. I think the max they do is 195cm in height.

So I bought one of their widest (£20) and one of their shortest width ones (£10) (both 195cm height)

and did this

But as you only require 180cm, you could cut a 20cm strip off the width and attach that to the bottom. Voila!

Cheers for the responses guys, this seems like the best way to go. I take it then that Ikea are still selling the Tuplar blind? Anyone been in recently?

Clint.

I think Tuplar blinds are one of their staple products. I can't find them on their web site, but then again, I don't think I could find it 6 months ago when I bought my blinds... Better get on the dog and bone!

I can confirm that they are still current, well they were last Friday in the Croydon ikea, when I picked up the 200cm wide one for my screen, the larger blinds do see to sell out though, but then they do get regular deliveries of them.

Try giving their customer services a ring for local stock levels, they were very helpful when I phoned. Number will be on the website.

Ricky

PS. As said before, they are not advertised on the website:confused:
