I've recently bought a H&B CA-5555 stereo for £85 incl postage when I bought it:

    http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/114326/art/h-b/ca-5555-cd-mp3-usb-car-ra.html#

It's got a USB port on the front so I bought a 3.5" HD enclosure for £19, a £10 12v regulated car adapter and had an old 20GIG HD lying around.

It can read 200 folder of mp3s and a max of 500 mp3s.

However I want more. So i'm going to see if the stereo will read a number of 1GIG partions on the HD so I can have 200 folders on each partition.

Has anyone got any idea of what specifications (partition/file system) that the stereo would require for this to be possible?

    Cheers,
    jon.

    Hi Jon,

This setup is exactly what ive been looking for, can you answer a few questions for me?

What is it like for browsing the HD? How fast is it? Is the 500 mp3 limit per folder? Can you browse sub folders? Can you 'play' a whole folder rather than browse?

Had any luck with your partitions?

Would you recommend buying this or wait for the next gen of USB stereos?

    Thanks,
    Rich.

hi rico, good to hear from some1 with some interest. I can't see why aren't interested in doing this cos it's easy.

    To answer your questions:
Q)What is it like for browsing the HD?
A)Good. same as browsing a memory pen or mp3 CD. Press a button
once for track search (1-500) (bit crap-just shows the track number).

twice for folder search which is great.select the folder you want then press the volume knob in and select you track within the folder with folder names and ID3 tags displayed. (however the stereo does not let you browse through the folder directories like windows does, but if you do have a folder within a folder it will display it separately from the containing folder-if you know what I mean!)

three times for character search which you select the letters by scrolling the vol knob.

    Q)How fast is it?
A)The hard drive is read just as fast as a mp3 CD once the HD has spun up (about 5 sec).

    Q)Is the 500 mp3 limit per folder?
A)UNFORTUNATELY NO. this is the total mp3 limit. i've been trying for a few days now to find a way round this (partitions) This means about 50 albums or 200 albums (total max folders=200) on the HD which is great really when you consider the price and hastle of a CD changer (only 12 CDs).

However I'm going to rig up two or possibly more HDs with a normal HD ribbon going to the IDE to USB adapter (HD encloser) and have a power switch so I can have a few 4GB HDs and switch between them. I did also look into getting a SANYO mp3 CD changer (=12x14 50MB albums = 168 albums) but can't find a mp3 sanyo changer. and the CA-5555 changer facility is "optional" so i don't have one for some reason :[

    Q)Can you browse sub folders?
A)not browse through folders but stereo does display them separately.

Q)Can you 'play' a whole folder rather than browse?
A)Yes search through to your folder then play the first mp3 and the rest will play in sequence. Though i think it depends on the order in which they are coppied to the HD which dictates the order they are displayed (i think). Not a prob tho cos windows copies a folder of mp3s in alphabetical order.;>

Q)Had any luck with your partitions?
A)No...poo...Do you have any suggestions or any partition configuration which would allow it? If there was a way to hide the other partitions so that it only sees the one you want to play from? You can do this by PC (partition magic) but no way "In-Car"?

Q)Would you recommend buying this or wait for the next gen of USB stereos?
A)I'd buy now. By the time something better comes along we'll all be using blue laser DVDs to play our music. This is another option that I looked into - DVD player. but requires a TFT screen to view the folder and MP3 names. I could handle having a small wallet or DVD changer of music in the Car or escort van as mu case is.

Well FOOK me! even my Gran don't rant as much as this.
Hope i've answered your Q's fully and well done if you've got this far.

    Post how you get on.
    cheers,
    jon

Thanks for all the information Jon!

I've just had a few ideas you could try.

    Does the stereo recognise playlists?
If so could you put all the playlists in the root that point at all the sub directories. This might stop the restriction of 500 mp3s/200 folders?

    c:\
    Abba.m3u
    Aerosmith.m3u
    Music
    Abba
    1
    2
    Aerosmith
    1
    2
Would putting the folder structure like this work any better? You're never likely to have 200 folders at the same level

    c:\
    A
    Abba
    Aerosmith
    B
    Bryan Adams
    Busted

I dont know much about partitions etc so cant really help you with that.

Think i've just realised how it works now. Does the HU make a list of the first 500 mp3s it finds and then ignores the rest?

If so then none of what i suggested before will work will it!

How about making each album into 1 large mp3? At least then you could access 500 albums. Although it would be a pain to navigate around each album. Its a pity there is no chapter functionality like in DVDs.

If i keep making dumbass ideas maybe it will inspire someone else to come up with a real solution eh?

Has anyone tried connecting an iPod via USB to this head unit ?

now *that* would be very cool - all I'd have to do is make sure the disk access is enabled on the iPod and that the iPod was formatted FAT-32 (on a PC).

somehow I don't think it's going to be that simple.... or is it ?

If you are going the ipod route you may as well use the line in on the headunit if available, then use the lovely ipod interface.

    Hi,

been looking for a while and thought I'd finally found the right car audio
which also plays SDC and a usb port for our mp3 players.

Had the model fitted yesterday and whatever I try I cannot get the
mp3 players to work. Tried 1/2 dozen diff mp3 players into the usb
port (256 / 512 & 1GB) but none of these seem to work. Even if I
connect a CD/MP3 player to the unit - it works fine. Radio is fine.
    Everything seems to work ok.

Although the CA-5555 is advertised as being 1.1 / 2.0 compatable.

The SD card works fine. In fact if I copy muisc to the SD - it works
and looks good. But my whole point for this was to simply plug an
mp3 player into the usb port and off you go...

Has anyone else experienced this problem and how do you solve?
Is there something I am missing?

    Thanks

This player is very similar to mine. It fits my Astra very well. You have to replace the cage, but i would expect this would come with the unit.

Howver I had a right chew on wiring it up because whoever put the last one in cut out the ISO. Had to buy a new one :(

Its the battery and ignition isnt it? One is yellow and one is read.
Thing is, mine were both RED! One was slightly thicker. Had to get the multimetre out.

Good luck. And when you get it working you wont regret it. These players are the dogs footballs.

yeah its to do with keeping it with power when the ignition is off, fortunately the stereo comes with a harness that has the ability to cross the wires which i thought was a nice feature

one thing i wasn't expecting though, the aerial plug on my corsa wasn't the normal type so i couldn't plug it in, but a journey to maplin, £1.06 and a couple of minutes with some wire cutters later it all works perfect :smashin:

and yes you are quite right its amazing for its price, it made a huge difference to the sound of the standard speakers, also i think there may be a slight design flaw (or i'm doing something wrong) with taking the front panel off, witout the surround on you can slide the face to the left slightly and it pops off with the surround however it cant go anywhere because it hits the surround, any tips on this ?
