My mate has been looking for a new speaker system and has come across the Evo 3B package. Is there any other packages he should consider in this price range? He would prefer floor standers for the fronts and a 6.1 system if possible but a 5.1 would do nicely. It doesn't have to be a package. Mix and match on the speakers and sub would be OK. He will be hooking them up to a Yamaha DSP-640SE.

In value terms there's not much to rival the AEs you mention, but be aware that they have been, or are about to be discontinued pretty soon, so you'll have to buy them quickly if you want to get hold of a set.

I had a feeling that they may be on their way out giving the price drop over recent months. This maybe explains why my mate is having a problem finding a set in stock. He is looking for alternatives just in case he can't get any of the Evo 3B's.

I assume you're referring to the original 'Pacific' series & not the 'evo' series hornydragon?

In which case I guess they are up to AE level.

The Mission M5 series is another fine suggestion, but they're discontinued too. Infact all the suggestions thus far are...

Had a look on Hyperfi's website and saw the Pacific Evo's for only £400  Will have to tell my mate about those as, apparently, that's a £600 saving on the original price.

Do you think he would still need a sub to go with these or would the fronts go low enough to compensate. If not, can you recommend a sub in the £300/£350 range?

Of course you are right but we are brainwashed into believing that every new model produced by a speaker manufacturer is better than the last, which just isn't true.

Magazines need something to review and dealers need something to sell and the cycle will continue as long as there are sufficient people out there who buy with their eyes and not their ears.

I was told the M5's were discontinued because the silver put off buyers and they didn't sell well. Hence the Volare's with 'wood' fronts.

As for Hyperfi, have they got the Evo's in stock? They've never had anything in when I've phoned them.

Normally just cheaper to produce as they get away with cheaper materials, SONY well that was a good idea drop standards raise profits rubbish your brand name and now get overtaken by the small fish!

I thik stock at £400 would limited to the set in the salesmans car boot but what the betting they have an "equivalent" set for £450!!!

A quick update. He did manage to get a set of AE Evo's eventually. He bought them from Hyperfi for £699 delivered and gets them tomorrow [Monday 19th].
