Hi all, I sold my floorstanders/center/surrounds and have been thinking about downsizing....

However, I am now thinking about just running a pair of L/R mains, either floor standing or standmounting.

I've 700 ish to spend. My current equipment is as follows....

    Yamaha RXV1800 (as processor)
    Rotel RMB 1075 power amp
    BK XLS200 sub

Im not sure what to go for. I was all set to buy 5 M1's and just make do. But now im thinking of a main stereo pair and ignoring the suround.

Ive looked at the XTZ 99.36 and like the design, but what else!?!?!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

As you have a sub why not get the 99.25/6 instead of the floorstanders.

exdemo B&W 683s going for that price. Cm5s around there. Cheaper if exdemo.

not sure of the tonal qualities of the XTZ, but I would think the CMs, and Kef Rs would not match the BK sub well.

    What were your old speakers?

    Dali Zensor 7 -

Dali Zensor 7 Speakers (Pair) for £649.00 in Speakers

    Just a trace over budget.

    Wharfedale Diamond 157 -

    http://www.audioaffair.co.uk/wharfedale-diamond-157-speakers-pair

The XTZ 99.36 seem a bit over you budget at €1200/pr (£989/pr).

    The XTZ 95.44 are €750/pr, so £620/pr.

But more so than a list of speakers in your budget range, what is it you are trying to do? Are you shifting away from movies and more toward music?

How will the new system be configured? As a surround sound 5.1? As a 2.1? 2.0?

The better we can understand your goals, the better we can help you serve them.

With the soon to be released XTZ Cinema Series not too far away you may well find you have a choice of second hand XTZ speakers coming up for sale. If you are seriously considering that brand i'd tend to agree with kbfern, why not look at the smaller 99.25's and 99.26's.

If you're considering the XTZ 99 series, then going to the B&W 6 series is, IMHO, not a great idea. You might want to keep an eye out for Dali Ikon second hand sales as an alternative, or as above, some of the 99 series that might show up once the Cinema series are released.

I haven't heard the new B&W 600's but they are meant to be a step up over the old 600's with a new tweeter based on the CM10 tweeter and new bass driver's with a FST midrange driver. They could be an option when they hit the shops soon. Have you looked at the new monitor audio silver range.

I compared the older 684 and 683, as well as 685, to the CM series speakers. The 600 series seemed nice, reasonably clear, with full warm bass. But then I head the CM series, and by comparison, the 600's seem blurred or smeared. Now that price difference between those speakers is huge. But you could really hear the faults in the 600's when you heard them along side the CM series.

Don't get me wrong, the 600 series are very well liked, and I can certainly see the appeal in their price range, but while clear enough, they are not the most detailed speakers.

Sadly, I was not able to compare the 600's with any of the other brands we commonly recommend in that price range. So I can't comment on that.

I've not heard the XTZ, but the reviews and user feedback on them is pretty impressive. But again, the 99.36 (€1200/pr) are well above your stated budget. The 95.44 (£750/pr) come in just under your budget. So, either you have raised your budget, or you have to consider the 95.44 models.

XTZ 95.44 Black Matt - XTZ Hifi

XTZ 99.36 MKII Matt Black - XTZ Hifi

If you have or can raise your budget to £1000 or a bit more, then there is a completely different list of speaker for you to consider, among them would be the Dali Ikon 6 -

Dali Ikon 6 MkII Speakers (Pair) for £999.00 in Speakers

    Ikon MK2

    DALI Ikon 6 loudspeaker | Stereophile.com

In other speaker at or near £1000/pr -

Floor Standing Speakers Monitor Audio RX8 | hifix.co.uk

Floor Standing Speakers Monitor Audio SILVER 6 | hifix.co.uk

Floor Standing Speakers Monitor Audio SILVER 8 | hifix.co.uk

Floor Standing Speakers Bowers And Wilkins 683 S2 | hifix.co.uk

I'm not sure why there's no photo for this one, but the 684 S2 is worthy and closer to your budget -

Floor Standing Speakers Bowers And Wilkins 684 S2 | hifix.co.uk

    684 | 600 Series | Bowers & Wilkins

Bowers & Wilkins 684 S2 Floorstanding Loudspeakers available at Hifi Gear

    Also -

    Floor Standing Speakers Kef Q700 | hifix.co.uk

    Floor Standing Speakers Kef Q900 | hifix.co.uk

    Paradigm Monitor 7

    Paradigm Monitor 9

I think in my previous post I covered the best NEW speakers under £700/pr. Now, I've added a few that come in closer to under £800/pr. If that is your price range, and you want floorstanding, then these are the speakers.

If you are looking for a pair of speakers, then take a look at our bargain's page! As we are closing down, you may find that we have some speakers available to you which you may have thought to be out of your price range.

I recently bought a pair of KEF Q500's, and have been really impressed with their precision and clarity.

Although they are still £700 at some places, there are some bargains to be found if you search for them.

I popped into RJAV today and had to use all my willpower to not buy the Q500s.

I'm thinking of getting some floorstanders but haven't had chance to have a proper look or listen to anything yet and couldn't bring myself to buy them without a proper audition.

I'll probably get round to a proper shopping trip sometime soon and end up kicking myself for missing out...

You could do a lot worse than consider what I've been using for the last 3 years, Epos Elan 30.

Now replaced by the new K range they can be had new for under £600 these days. Superb floorstanders, my only regret is that I didn't buy the Rosewood finish rather than the Black.

I do agree with this; before deciding to spend more and get the XTZ 99, I auditioned the Elan 15 and really, really liked them. The floor standers are probably pretty much the same, just with added low end.

Must admit I never auditioned the Q500's, and although I know auditioning speakers can be useful, I also find that the room and equipment that is used for the audition is so far removed from mine that you only get a vague indication of how it will sound when in your house.

Dont get me wrong, if I was spending £2000+ on a pair I might concern myself with the small nuances between speakers, but in this case I knew they were the spec I was after so was happy to go for them.

Really impressed with them now they have run in, although I would probably be as impressed with Monitor Audios etc of similar price.
