I want a receiver for a split of approx 60% movies 40% music.

I am considering the Yamaha 1400, HK 330, Denon 2805 and the Marantz5400ose.

I am coupling them with the AE Evo3b.

Anyone got much experience with these? I cant seem to find any discount internet deals on the HK equipment, whereas the Yahama gear all seems to be knocked-down......is this coz it aint up to much?

Go 2nd hand, £600 buys you a lot. I should have some sort of short cut for that phrase I say it so much. :)

The amps you have picked are all good choices (not sure about the 5400 ose though, I'd go for a 7400 before that which you can get for under £600). I'd throw the Pioneer AX3 in there too.

Yup, Marantz SR7400 is a cracker, and available at bargain prices.

But Daneel is right, you could pick up a cracking high end av amp for £600 on the 2nd hand market. You wouldn't go far wrong with the Marantz SR7400 though.

Which is about £400 too much compared to current amps.

yeah £600 will buy you a lot - I am selling a Denon 3802 AV receiver (Gold) if you are interested (below the £600 mark of course) - on ebay at the moment under auctions but if do not get what i wish am going to advertise it here (sorry if this post is in the wrong place - just trying to be helpful). I am in Manchester - if that is any concern - the thing is HEAVY so postage could be pricey. Anyway if interested check it out - it is in mint condition - I am selling as would like to upgrade & my wife wants me to buy a silver amp to go with her decor - yeah i know who is boss (i got away with the speakers on all 7 channels though ! )

    Here is a review :

I am a bit worried about the Yamaha for music - listened to the HK330 in a store and it sounded far punchier to me than the denon or yamaha when in stereo.

Just cant find any bargains on HK stuff. Would really like to get the 430.

The denon probably is more refined than punchy with stereo but still is good if paired with punchy speakers..... you may have to turn it up a little though to see the true performance.

The Yamaha I am not sure but was looking at auditioning the 2400 as an upgrade though.....

If you want the killer musical AV amp in that price range, you REALLY need to listen to the Marantz SR7400.

I have to second Kazman, I too have the SR7400 and bought it because of its unbelievable musicality. An amazing machine with full 7.1 channel or 2 zone capability (5.1/2).

Even with a really crappy sub/sat setup, like at my place, my friends rave about the sound. My brother-in-law even asked me about my "Tedelex" satellites on Sunday because he couldn't believe how amazing they sounded. Well, the full 5 satellites with a Tedelex DVD player and passive SW cost me AUD$180 on eBay so you figure out how good they are :) All I've done is add a AUD$200 100W 10" active SW and everyone reckons it sounds amazing!!

Do yourself a favour, check the SR7400 out before you make a call. At least then it will be an informed call.

    Cheers,
