Smallish room. Will be used for music games and movies.
If music is not good enough i'll buy a dedicated stereo amp later on.

Currently looking at Yamaha 763 or Sony DG820 for the amp.

Which should leave about £350 for speakers an am open to either floor standers or bookshelfs (and stands) + a good center (I like having a center).
No space for a sub at the moment.

Any advice?

Definitely the Yamaha 763 over the 820 IMO

If you're not having a sub then some floorstanders would give you deeper bass, i question the centre idea, but it's your money and room!

These get excellent reviews in the price bracket:

MORDAUNT SHORT 914I-MAP at Richer Sounds - HI-FI Separates, Home Cinema, Speakers, MP3 DVD Portables, Plasma LCD, etc.

And Centre:

MORDAUNT SHORT 905I-AVANT-MAP at Richer Sounds - HI-FI Separates, Home Cinema, Speakers, MP3 DVD Portables, Plasma LCD, etc.

Just makes budget too.... and if you buy the lot from Richers i'm sure they'd some sort of deal (they're the cheapest place for the Yamaha..)
