    What I need:

    Hi

Denon 1602 should be around 250-300 quid. But also have a look at the models available from Yamaha, Marantz, Harmon Kardon, Sony.

If you look in HCC you can get the Denon 1802 for £299.
I did and I'm happy with it.

I'm sorry, it's Home Cinema Choice. But your last message snuck in between me sending mine -- I'm afraid the £299 price is for a black Denon 1802 not gold (mind you if you really want silver, the gold one wouldn't be any good anyway.
The store (yes, a real place you can visit and talk to the people!) where I bought mine was Bob Electronics in Ruislip 01895 636638

    Simon

P.S. I'll try to avoid acronyms in future!

thanks simon, I will have a look in HCC ;)

from the info on the denon site, it looks like exactly what I need so I would take black for that baby :)

You may want to look at the new Sony receivers. They have the STR-DE585 and STR-DE685 which are both under your budget (so you can buy some decent interconnects) and both are available in silver, and have DPLII, DD and DTS

I'm waiting for the 685 - due early August....

just recommended a friend to get 1802 denon from leconcepts for £300, and wharfedale diamond pack for £260 from qed.

    i'd buy it.

but, beware, leconcepts are not an authorised dealer for denon, so denon dealers will charge for warranty work. however, leconcepts will happily exchange if you have problems, so, no real problem there.

thanks super7, I have indeed also got my eye on the 685 as it did fit exactly what I was looking for but no one seemed to be able to let me know when it was due, so thanks for that :) Im not in any great rush so I might also hang for this one unless I can find a good deal on some of the others mentioned :)

    thanks

    Hi Deets
If you are going to be watching TV/Video's though your amp, then I would recomend that you look at models with PL2.
    Samir :)

I think your right, it's only an acronym if it spells another word e.g. Radar :p

You are correct, of course - an acronym is supposed to spell another recognised word as a result of the abbreviation. This is such a shame as my spelling and grammar had been impeccable in all my previous postings!

    Don't go checking them now!!

I've personally got a Sony 475 (in silver). It does 5.1 & DTS and will come well under your buget, leaving you some cash to put towards the 5-speakers and base you're going to need. ;)

If you want a silver amp, then Pioneer, Kenwood and Sony all do models at less than £300 with your required spec (all are new models though, so you may have to wait)
Yamaha also have a couple with a "titanium" finish, which is a sort of greyish silver colour.

Have a look at the Pioneer VSXD811 - it's listed on QED's site at £315 - excellent spec for that price (probably the highest specced model you'll find for that money). I've never heard one though - few people will have I suspect as it's so new (not even sure if it's available yet), so I've no idea how good it is in action.

Buy the new August edition of What HiFi - there is a review of Yamaha's new Budget AV Amp - I think it has everything you ask for and is priced at £290 !!!

The website is a designer's dream, but a bit of a user's nightmare! Once I reloaded the home page and waited for everything to load, the navigation bar worked, and I found AV amps/receivers.

They list the 685 and others, but I didn't find any way of checking physical stock. Might give them a call - are they any good?

AVland are also advertising it, but haven't actually got any available, and my local shop rang Sony whilst I was there and were told second week of August.

My wife is bored of the box of surround speakers cluttering up the dining room, so I've got to get something soon!

There's a very helpful bloke there called Martyn. I agree about the web site, but they seem to be good and do get stock in early.

Tried Indigo a couple of times today, but were engaged.

Rang Sony on the way home, and they confirmed that the STR-DE685 has still not been released, but is expected early August.

I'll give them until then, or the search is on for something else. the new Yamaha (530RDS?) probably gets my vote, as long as it's silver ('er indoors again....) - anyone got one?
