5th or 6th generation 42" Panasonic, or one of the 42" Hitachi panels would be the best bet.

    Petrolhead,

Given the funds I think that you should look at the Panasonic TH-42PWD5, or the latest TH-42PWD6, both progressive displaying plasma's.

The latter being slightly more cash, but on paper is fairly impressive in the Video stakes (over 1 Billion in colour range, claimed contrast ratio 4000:1) you may have to hunt around to fit within £3k.

The TH-42PWD6 also gives you the ability to utilise DVI HDCP connectivity - should you wish.

    Cheers

    Tony

There's also the NEC 42VP4 which can be found under £3K and has great connectivity and very good picture from what I saw at a recent demo.

    Hi petrolhead,

How about the Fujitsu P42VHA20 which uses Panasonic glass? It appears to be the favoured 42" plasma on the US avsforum. Unfortunately, it's just outside your friend's budget at £3200. He would have to stretch to £3500 to get a HD capable plasma like a Pioneer 433MXE.

    petrolhead,

    Nice web site M8.

    Get a 4, 5 or 6 generation 42" Panasonic, and you won't regret it.

Take a look at AV-Sales, they giving them away TH-42PWD5 at £2560 ! or even the new super TH-42PWD6 at £3065 + input board.

I would go for a D6 if I was choosing one right now.

I got my D4 for £3100, and its worth every penny...

    Bluebear.

For 3K you can get an Hitachi 42PD3000E with AV/tuner box.

Mine produces staggeringly good pictures on DVD and Sky. Absolutely chuffed with my purchase.

My vote goes to the Hitachi PMA400E, rather than the 3000E, although both are VG:
    1. No tuner - so cheaper - than the 3000E
    2. Picture in picture/split screen mode. Not on the 3000E.
    3. Hi Definition compatable. Not on the 3000E.
    4. 4 inputs of which 3 can be component. The other "S" or composite.
    5. Lovely PQ and contrast.
    6. No duff pixels.
    7. Fan noise not significant at normal watching distance.
    8. Excellent price. (But be aware the extra price of a stand.)
    Hope this helps.
    Regards
