Yes another one of these threads, forgive me guys :)

I am in the market for a new pair of bookshelf speakers. I have recently sold my B&W 601 S1's which sounded great for years paired with a budget Mission MS6 Subwoofer (which was used sparingly, as a bass aid).

I mainly sold them due to being a little big for my current needs and also because I wanted to try something newer and hopefully....better.

My budget is £230 tops. I have been looking at, reading up on and basically drawn to either Q Acoustics 2020i, Dali Zensor 1's or Wharfedale Diamond 9.1's. I am open to other suggestions and my colour choice is white....but black is still a consideration.

I am leaning towards the 2020i's but would like to know if I can actually expect them to be £100 better than the 9.1's? I mean for £100 that seems like a cracking deal IF and I mean IF they are all that people make them out to be.

I will be Bi-Wiring (kind of puts me off the Zensor 1s's which lack it) with pretty decent cable and plugs. I am running a SONY STR-DN1030 for amplification, I have stands and I listen to all kinds of music. They will also run Blu-Ray and an XBOX 360. I will still use my sub if I find bass is lacking on any purchase.

Which (if any) will achieve a similar sound to my old 601's and will any surpass them?

Any input, experience or recommendations welcome.

    Thanks guys.

I'd look out for close out prices on the Monitor Audio RX1s, which will be more akin to your old 601s tonally, but with better performance, particularly over the 9.1s. You might be looking about £250-300 depending on finish (real wood veneers).

The Diamond 9.1 are an exceptional bargain in a very good speaker for £99/pr at Superfi.co.uk. (130mm, 50hz @-6dB)

In my opinion, the Q Acoustic 2020i are too limited in bass relative to the other speakers, but they are considered good speakers. (125mm, 64hz @ -3dB, ~58hz @ -6dB)

The Dali Zensor are very sweet. They don't have exaggerated bass which makes them ideal for desktop speakers. The depth of bass is typical of a speaker this size though. (130mm bass, 46hz to [email protected] -6dB)

However, do consider these speakers -

    £150/pr = Tannoy Mercury V1i bookshelf (130mm, 45hz -6dB)
    £195/pr = Wharfedale Diamond 121 (130mm, 45hz @ -6dB)
    £199/pr = Monitor Audio BX1 (140mm, 48hz to 50hz @ -6dB)

If there is anyway you can push above £200, then the following speakers have larger bass drivers (6.5" vs 5") and deeper bass -

    £238/pr = Wharfedale Diamond 122 bookshelf (165mm, 40hz @ -6dB)
    £249/pr = Monitor Audio BX2 bookshelf (165mm, ~36hz at -6dB)

Depending on your amp and your circumstances, this Bookshelf/Subwoofer combination is an exceptional bargain -

    Superfi - WHARFEDALE DIAMOND 9.1 SPEAKERS & SW150 SUBWOOFER 2.1 SPEAKER PACKAGE

Though I don't have a lot of feedback on them, the new Mission MX series seem to have gotten a good user response -

    £109/pr = Mission MX1 (130mm, 58hz @ -3dB, ~ 52hz @ -6dB)
    £199/pr = Misison MX2 (165mm, 52hz @ -3dB, ~ 45hz to 48hz @ -6dB)

Probably the top two in this price range are the Wharfedale Diamond and the Monitor Audio BX.

As to the Bi-Wiring terminals, forget about that, that is a feature that everyone wants and no one uses.

In addition, a new version of the B&W 600 series has just been released, you might find bargains on the previous 686 and 685 bookshelf speakers.

Thanks for all the info Steve, really appreciate you taking the time. I eventually went for a pair of Black Monitor Audio BX2's. They sounded a little bright at first but after a while I am getting used to them. Also on the bi-wiring, you nailed it. I tried it at first but went back to single and it sounds fine. I have connected the bi-wire terminals using speaker cable instead of the metal connectors they supplied and overall I am very pleased with the purchase (got them for £225 and a few days later they were back up to £250 from the same retailer). I am also on the lookout for the 685's going cheap as the new ones are out....but that is not an essential purchase or anything I am after any time soon....if I see a bargain, I will possibly grab it. Thanks again :). Also, any tips on crossover for the BX2's with sub? I am currently running 80hz.

When I had bx2s I ran the crossover at 100hz for a little bit more punch than the speakers could provide.
