I'm looking for a laptop with the following:

Blueray Writer
USB 3
Quality gaming GFX
Hi-end CPU

I plan to record audio (cubase/VSTi etc) and so will require something nice and fast.
I will probably continue to use my external sound card with it but if there is a laptop with this spec AND an able internal sound then that would be gr8.

I read that i7 is a killer on battery life and someone mentioned i5 Quad was much more economical with power. So perhaps the Intel i5 Quad is right for me..?

Any good deals or recommendations appreciated.

i7 2630qm quad core sandy bridge - possibly Dell XPS17 if you dont' mind a larger computer?

or an Acer 5750 15"

edit: hmm, bluray writer cuts things down a bit - you could use a USB one if its only for occasional use, it'd give you a broader range of laptops to choose from

Thank you both for some fantastic help.
I like Acer a lot and considered.
Just checking spec options on your link Broona.
Will let you know what I decide.
Cheers for your input.

Well, 1 month along and still no laptop.
I went with the Kobalt computers suggestion, much to my regret!
I cannot contact them by phone and emails to their support go unanswered.
I spent £2000 on a laptop and I still have not received it.
The one answer I did get was to inform me that they had problems with their phone system and that my laptop would be with me today. It hasn't arrived, as promised, and there is no sign or message to confirm that it has been sent.
BEWARE! I do not trust this company.

I can see them going the same way as mesh, and all because they don't email or keep in contact with the customer........:(

Hope you paid by credit card! Also hope it all works out in the end.

Yes I did. Bt that aint going to help speed refunds up. I read that forum link you posted (thank you) and I can see that I am not alone.
I do hope you have taken Kobalt computers off your recommend list, Broona.

Should help: phone up the cc company and explain that you are in dispute with this purchase. They may ask for supporting emails you have sent the sellers so keep all records. They may credit you back on the assumption that you continue to resolve the dispute with the seller.

Hi mate, just noticed your thread, if you go high spec with Dell/ Alienware i maybe able to get you some fantastic discount as i know a rep who works for them, if your interested msg me.

Well, HUGE thanks must go to you, azza21.
You came good for me pal, ensuring that I got a great deal with Dell.
Throughout the process I was kept informed and advised by the brilliant assistant, Shashi.
Now my laptop has arrived and I am well pleased with it. Setting it up as I type, and have to say it's the best laptop I have ever had the pleasure of putting my grubby paws on.

I would recommend that Dell promote the fine salesman, AND...give azza21 some commission also.
You're a top bloke azza21 and I thank you very much for coming to my rescue when all seemed doomed.

I will be very surprised if Kobalt Computers stay in business much longer, after the grotty service they offer, and all the excuses that they give when they can't deliver on their promises.

I cannot reiterate enough...BEWARE of that so called 'company'...they do not know how to run a business, or how to treat their customers fairly.
I have had to start a credit card dispute now as they will not refund me my £2000, even after agreeing to do so.

Hi,

I like a top hot laptop but don't like paying over the odds. Choice in the UK hasn't been great for a couple of years now. Unless you pay over the odds for a specialist like Alienware. Don't blow your budget with Dell, in my opinion. They are for budget buyers and money to burn buyers - not the sensible man in the middle.

Great power, value, GPU, SSD and more as well will be in the new Toshiba Qosmio range due early next month.

Here is a look at what to expect Which Laptop - Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78 from a US version. There will be i5 equivalents also. Probably around the £1800 price range.

-Not sure I can post the same thing in two threads, but it's relevant so here goes.

I ordered my Kobalt in July, and after six weeks they'd done nothing with my order. I've now cancelled and am beginning the laborious process of getting a refund - according to the Notebook Review forums getting a refund from Kobalt is like getting blood out of a stone.

I have started an action with my credit card company to get my money back.
Did you also receive the pdf from Kobalt blaming everyone else but themselves?
They are con men in my opinion.

Thanks for that info. Mod Edit: removed to conform to forum rules
