    Dear All,
Hopefully I will soon be discarding my trusty Pro-Ject Debut and availing myself of a Michel Tecnodec and Tecnoarm (unless anyone can think of a seriously good reason not to). This will run via Cambridge Audio 640P (a classic in the making I assure you) into my Electrocompaniet ECI3. The Mrs, being a lovely and generous soul will make available the sum of up to £200 to kit it out with cartridge.
I have up to this point been using a Grado Silver series MM of which I have few constructive complaints so if this thread is a bit of a non starter, I'll probably just buy the Gold version. I would however be interested to hear what you vinyl chaps swear by (or at) other than that. I have absolutely no bias toward MM or MC so please feel free to suggest either. The cart will have to cope with a varied diet- the only stuff I don't really have on analogue is electronica and techno.
    Ta muchly,
    ToF

Haave you thought of the Denon range- I currently use a DL110 on a p25/RB600, and am thinking of moving to a DL103 Superb sound and a very good match to Rega arms, The techno being a rega at heart

Stretch yourself a smidge further to £225 and go for an Ortofon MC25E from Musonic.

This is providing you can't stretch even further still to a £280 Audio Technica AT-OC9 from Mantra Audio - i still rate this as by far the best cartridge i have ever owned, and one of the best i have ever heard.

There are some very good MM's about out there, and they do have the advantage of replaceable stylii but IMVHO nothing beats a good MC.

I have seen various Decca cartridges for around £200. In the right system they can make almost every other cartridge sound dull and lifeless

Tons, does the 640P have variable loading for MC carts?

True, but only if the cartridge is not set-up correctly. Almost any cartridge may damage records if the alignment is poor.

My last Garrot Bros Decca sounded much better (in my system) compared to the various Koetsu's and Benz etc I tried.

The late Garrott brothers made great deccas, they were not cheap and didn't represent the norm. The latest stuff looks good as well (VERY expensive) but the Maroons, Blues and other colours etc (the bread and butter stuff) did make a mess of records even when correctly set up, but there was certainly something about the sound, that I have no doubts, but as an avid record collector, we always avoid records where people use Deccas!! The vast majority did damage, it is just the very expensive exotics that 'perhaps' didn't but it is 15 years since I lived with a Garrot tipped Decca.

I am not sure we would ever agree on this matter and in bearing this in mind maybe a Decca is not for everyone.

Might be. AFAIK, most MC carts in this price range are 100 Ohm (I assume this is the default MC load on the 640P?).

Some of the above might prefer 300-600Ohms.

This is why i'm still nagging the guys upstairs for an all-singing, all-dancing 740P with multiple inputs, variable loading resistance and capacitance and more blue LEDs, but no luck so far.............. :(

If you can stretch to an MC preamp with variable loading it's well worthwhile(IMHO)and really can make a difference with any single cartridge, plus allowing you to change alter without having to send back your pre- for alternative loadings.

I ended up buying a Trichord Dino with the NC power supply for that reason, after trying a good number of others incl the MF,Tom Evans Micro+ etc.

Thanks for the advice Alex, it transpires that because the 640P was designed upstairs, my one can be altered by the designer if I really need it to! :). Sadly we won't be able to do this for everyone.

Thats a very useful facility, having the designer on hand like that!...seriously though, does make a big difference...my cartridge is run pretty close to the maker's intended values, but can sound better with some discs by changing the loading a bit to suit.

Tecnodec and Tecnoarm then you have a decent front end. For a cartridge you've got to be thinking Ortofon MC25 fine Line (MC25 FL).

For the money nothing else comes close, or even in the same room.

With the deck you're going for then you should view this as a minimum to get something that blows your pants off.

Saying that though i wouldn't buy the Tecnodec so who am i to comment.
