£200 AV Speaker Set, what do you recommend?

Hi All,

I'm after a 5.1 speaker package to go with my Marantz SR4400 Amp. After some smallish stylish speakers maybe like the KEF 5005 set.

Don't have to be new but looking to spend £200 for a new or used set, just not sure what to look for at the moment so suggestions welcome please.

Thanks Mike

Hi mate, you should also state what percentages you going to use these for movies/music/games. Different speakers perform for different uses. But small sats would be good for TV and movies but not great for music. If music needs to be played maybe small bookshelf fronts might be better.

Hi Jason, thanks, I currently have some Mordaunt Short 9.1i which i use as stereo speakers however want a full surround sound set, however I could use these as fronts.

Would say 40% music and 60% TV/film.

Hi mate, im no expert but for your budget I'd say get a mordaunt short centre speaker and 2 small rears. The rears don't have to match but the front 3 do, for tonal qualities. Also when you play music you can play direct source and your receiver will play stereo out your front left and right MS speakers. That will sound better than getting smaller 5.1 set. Do you have a sub as you'll need to budget for that too.

Going down this route is also better as it gives scope to upgrade little by little.

A sub will eat into your £200 budget, get a centre speaker first, then a sub and when finances permit any cheap speakers will work for rears, then after time just keep upgrading when you can afford to. That's what most do on here. Check the classifieds for some good deals.
