I’ve just argued myself a full refund on my 42” plasma as it wasn’t HDTV. Now after investing about 6 hours reading through these post’s I’ve decided to get another Non-HDTV as I’ve been convinced that the Panasonic PWD8 is just as good if not better than most HDTV’s out there.

Now where to buy? Well I’ve found a UK based company that is selling them in a great package.

    Panasonic TH-42PWD8B and includes:
    • Tilting wall mount
    • S-video terminal board
    • Scart terminal board
    • Next day delivery

    £1,450 inc VAT

Am I correct in thinking this is a fantastic deal (or is there a catch)???

I would definitely go with Liam at ProgressiveAV, he contibutes a lot to the forum so you know you will always have support at hand.

    Great price.

The discountaudiovision price is not so great when you add the £115 for the scart board and £115 for the wall mount. And who are they? if you have a problem on delivery do you think they will be rushing round to get it sorted for you?

    Also consider AV-Sales ...

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232371

    Very good offer

Although all of this pales into insignificance when you realse that you can get the TH-50PHD8 for only £1800 in the US - The TH42PWD8 comes in at about £950 in the US.

Even European pricing on the PWD8 is around £200 cheaper!

    Delivery is £80 though.

Anyone know of anywhere that will be selling the HD version when there are any units about?

My budget has gone from £1000 to about £2000 in a month

Gizlaroc, thanks for that depressing reminder of the utter contempt with which we are treated by most manufacturers of most global products.

Ironic that they chose to call it 50PHD8'UK' as the UK's where you're least likey to ever see one!

I know we are treating this outrageous price differential with some good humour BUT is it not about time to actually take a more serious stand on this.

MAW has suggested that 40% of European Plasma pricing is Tax and that accounts for the main difference - I do not believe that for one minute!

It is pure greed by Panasonic and our stupidity for paying the prices.

The fact is - these prices WILL HAVE come down to US levels within 12 Months - consumer demand and manufacturers competition will dictate this.

Already here in the UK the PWD8 has seen a welcome drop of £200 or so within weeks of it's introduction.

Remember there is no such massive pricing differential in Computing gear - why is that ? Because it's mass market gear and Plasmas are becoming mass market now!

It is absolutely outrageous that one can buy a 50" HD Panasonic Plasma in the US for the same price as a 42" SD Panasonic Plasma in the UK

One thing you have to look at is the way they price their screens in the US

you have the screen, if you live local great $2825, if you need it shipped look at the rates.....

Shipping Charges For : PANASONIC TH50PHD8UK
    Ground Service : $257.75
    Express Service : $407.75
White Glove Ground Service : $382.75
    White Glove Air : $617.75

    need a stand?

    Panasonic - TY-ST07-K - Pedestal Stand
    $299

Scart board or in the US case component board.....

Panasonic - TY-42TM6Z RCA Component Video Terminal Board
    $199

what about matching the 2 yr in home warranty?

RepairMaster - 2 Year In-Home Service Extended Warranty for TVs and Projectors (Under $5000)
    $349

So say you want you screen there in 2 days with a stand and an extra input board and the 2 yr warranty?

    2825.00 screen
    407.00 shipping
    199.00 input board
    349.00 warranty
    -------
    3780.00 Total
    -------

    3,780.00 USD
    United States Dollars
    =
    2,090.76 GBP
    United Kingdom Pounds

You need to add tax to that of 6%.

Look at our price, probably around £3200 when we get them and bundles come through, and to be fair we must knock off the tax we give to the government as a comparison which is 17.5%.

UK price £3200 which leaves our pice at £2700 near enough.
The distibutors also get taxed bringing it into the UK and video equipment has a fairly hefty import duty, around another 11% I think it is. So if we didn't have that the screen would be just over £2400.

Leaving a difference of just over £300, I bet the US got more than that in discounts from Panny Japan for the quantity they bought.

I think you're paying a hefty premium to be first owners of this panel.

I'd want the price to be closer to £1000 seen as the fully loaded consumer TV 42PE50 is selling for £1300 with wall bracket and DVD recorder (and the replacement HDMI equipped model will sell for a similar price). As ever though, it will take a couple of months for the price to settle...

Tariff on electronics, 8%, and another 14% on HDCP enabled diplays, both of which are added to the 'base' price, and then VAT is paid on the duty too.... Gussie please note! I don't really want to be the one to stand up for rip off britain, I'd just like Y'all to know who's ripping who.

    Oh I am sorry. :lease:

Haha, just kidding, you are more than welcome to come over to Norwich and see the 6 series HD panel running.
M6, A14, M11. Takes me about 2hrs40mins to get to yours.

Although someone a little closer may be able to demo one to you if you put a post up asking.

Yeah it is an 8 series now, but I have a 6 series, if you want to see that running you are more than welcome. All the reports are saying the 8 series is the best yet, however the 7 series was not really as good as the 6, there were some issues with the 7.

But the 6 series is SD isnt it? Im just interested to see how the PHD8 handles sd material. The only HD source i will be using is the 360, some people might say its not worth going HD just for this, but i HAVE to have 360 in HD

The 4, 5, 6, 7 and now 8 series are available as SD or HD panels.

The 4 and 5 series are still my favourites, they give a stunning image, really smooth if not quite as good on the blacks, but still far better than just about every other screen out there even now. But then these were what? £6k screens? When the glass was costing an absolute fortune you could justify putting better electronics in the panels, now everyone expects the screen for nothing compromises have to be made.

I have the 42PHD6, which is the same as the 42PHD8 but does not accept HDMI at 50Hz like the 8 series now does.
