The Untouchables DVD Review
SRP: £19.99

Picture

The cinematography gives a 1930s feel to the film. The picture is almost monochrome at times, with just a touch of red here and there, kind of reminiscent of Schindler's List. The transfer is clean and sharp, and the anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen helps draw you in.

Sound

The sound is slightly hollow and fairly dead. The Ennio Morricone score works at times, sounding like a film noir track at time, but overall it's a little saccharine and distracting. Although it's a Dolby Digital 5.1 it isn't very impressive and most of the effects (explosions and gunfire) sound unexciting. You have to turn the sound right up to hear the dialogue properly. The German track is only two-channel digital stereo, but it somehow sounds louder and brighter.

Extras

A trailer. There are subtitles in a load of languages too, but apart from that this is really disappointing. Even a budget disc needs more than this to keep you interested. An intelligent and gripping gangster drama let down by poor sound quality and an unforgivable lack of extras
