Picture

The United States of Leland is presented in a fairly clean 1.85:1 aspect ratio anamorphically enhanced widescreen transfer. The detail is reasonably good throughout, with a slight touch of TV-softness to the proceedings, no sign of edge enhancement and marginal grain. The colour palette is quite broad and often sun-drenched, with fairly rich tones and solid blacks. Overall it is not a particularly bad transfer but it is nothing to write home about.

Sound

The movie is presented with a perfectly reasonable Dolby Digital 5.1 track that is basically just a glorified stereo mix because of its frontal dominance. The dialogue comes clearly from the forward array, with very few effects in the movie (although those that there are do get some rear coverage) and an occasional score that broods along across the speakers (also sometimes breaching into the rears). There's no bass to speak of and nothing special to note but considering the quiet, slow-burning style of the movie, this is a perfectly reasonable sound presentation.

Extras

Unfortunately all we get for this release is the accompanying Theatrical Trailer.
The United States Of Leland
The United States of Leland may not have a lot of hype surrounding it but it is nevertheless a thought-provoking exploration of the mind of a teen killer. The technical presentation is minimal and there are no significant extras to speak of but that should not deter you from giving this a rental. Admittedly it's neither going to win an Oscar nor is it going to have you happily munching on popcorn, but it raises enough questions to keep you intrigued for well over its runtime.
