The Sound Of Music DVD Review
SRP: £19.99

Picture

The US version of The Sound of Music wasn't the best transfer in 20th Century Fox's Five Star Collection. Despite being THX-certified, the image was a little hazy and unclear in places, with substantial amounts of grain present. The image also suffered from too much edge enhancement which gave the film a slightly unnatural look. We've received exactly the same anamorphic 2.2:1 transfer on this UK disc, and the same problems apply. All things considered though, it still looks pretty good.

Sound

The soundtrack also falls into the good but not great category. There's very little wrong with the Dolby Digital 4.1 mix, but why didn't 20th Century Fox go the whole hog and mix the film all the way up to 5.1? Still, the music is what really counts here, and thanks to some superb use of the rear speakers and a tremendous bass track, it sounds as fresh and exciting as ever.

Extras

On the first disc, you get the film and an interesting commentary by director Robert Wise, which picks up considerably after a shaky and obviously scripted start.
On disc two you get fluffy 1965 documentary promoting the film and Salzberg, an excellent 88min look at the making of the film which also takes in the real-life relationship between Maria and the Von Trapp family and offers a quick guide to the work of Rogers and Hammerstein. Also on offer are TV spots and previews, radio spots, a 1973 re-issue interview with Andrews and Wise, audio-only supplements and on-location interviews, A Telegram from Daniel Truhitte, and Ernest Lehman: Master Storyteller.A little more work could have gone into the transfer, but the wealth of extras go some way to making up for it
