The One Blu-ray Review
SRP: £19.99

Picture

'The One' flying kicks its way on to Blu-ray with a very good 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 transfer framed at 2.40:1. The contrast and deep blacks are very impressive on this nice sharp print. Skin tones are well rendered and it doesn't suffer from over sharpening issues. Fine grain is evident throughout but it only really catches your eye on shots involving white shirts, where it's quite pronounced - but I've seen 35mm prints in the cinema look much worse than this. Colours are nice and strong, helping provide quite a dynamic looking image that has a fair bit of 'pop' about it.
Overall this is quite a nice transfer with nothing to really offend the eyes.

The One

Sound

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround track on 'The One' will give your amp a good shakedown if you've been playing quiet movies recently. Dialogue is generally locked cleanly to the centre, with surrounds leaping into action with the rock music supporting the action scenes. You'll be sweeping up spent bullet casings from the carpet after viewing this film as they genuinely tinkle to the ground around you and you might be forgiven for getting the 'polyfilla' out to deal with the holes in the walls.
The LFE helps provide general atmospheric rumbles as well as foundation rocking thuds to accompany explosions. There is quite an impressive sound stage to be enjoyed with this movie.

Extras

  • Audio Commentary

Director James Wong and a plethora of crew members enjoy a jolly good chinwag with memories and background information on the production. For hardened fans only.

  • Jet Li is 'The One' (SD, 13 mins)

This featurette includes interviews with James Wong, Jet Li & Jason Statham focussing on Li's appropriateness for the starring role in the movie.

  • Multiverses Create - 'The One' (SD, 18mins)

Jet Li and his stunt team take a look behind the scenes at the preparation behind the Martial Arts fight scenes in the movie.

  • About Face (SD, 6 mins)

This featurette focuses on the differences between the good and bad characters played by Jet Li - showing how expressions and looks were used to denote which one he was playing in a scene.

  • The Many Faces Of Jet Li (SD, 2 mins)

This mini featurette show Li in the guise of all of his multiuniverse incarnations.

  • Animatic Comparison (SD, 1 min)

This is pretty hilarious as, instead of animated artwork, the cheapskates used plastic toy characters and cars, moving them by hand to produce animatics.

  • Trailers (HD 5 mins total)

Trailers for 'Hancock' and '21' are included to round off the package.

The One

The Jet Li Sci-Fi, Martial Arts fest 'The One' teleports on to Blu-ray with a very good 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 transfer framed at 2.40:1. Deep blacks and vibrant colours make this pleasing to watch as it has a very filmic look.

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround track pulls no punches with good surround effects and powerful bass to support the many action sequences.

There's a shovelful of SD extras supplied with the film that will be of interest to Jet Li fans worldwide.

The movie itself is a bit lacklustre, with a 'seen it all before' quality to the storyline and effects, but after a few beers and a curry, it'll hit the spot.
