The Critic Movie Review

Hop to

“Why do you have to be so critical?”

“I'm a critic.”

“No, your job is to rate movies on a scale from 'good' to 'excellent'.”

“What if I don't like them?”

“That's what 'good' is for......”

Jay Sherman is the film critic for a TV show called Coming Attractions. We follow Jay and his son Marty as they fumble and bumble their way both through life and bad movies.

Well this was a nice surprise: a smart, funny and touching cartoon for movie fans! Lampooning everything (and everyone) in the movie industry, but with style and an eye for detail, I was bowled over just how good the writing for these episodes actually is. From Hans Zimmer's mock Gershwin score, obviously aimed at Wood Allen's Manhattan, to the very funny movie clips, this cartoon pretty much hits the targets at every turn.

The voice acting by Jon Lovitz and the rest of the cast is pitch perfect, just the right kind of droll humour to match the barbed script.

Although this show is from the producers of The Simpsons, I can't help but feel that the target audience for The Critic is an older, more film savvy crowd - after all, many of the spoofs in this show are often genre movies, or 18 certificate material, for example, the Alien 3 reference in the first episode.

I was surprised that this show was cancelled after 23 episodes. The quality obviously wasn't an issue; I can only assume that the ratings were poor. I hope that this DVD set has the same effect as the recent Firefly release - show the studio execs that this is a great, popular show, and that maybe they should consider commissioning more episodes.
