The Alamo DVD Review
SRP: £19.99

Picture

Though you wouldn't guess it from the packaging, this is a magnificent 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer. As can be seen in the opening shot of Chapter 20, the image does sometimes suffer under a weight of fine grain, but it still manages to look superior to many recent films currently arriving on the market. A commendable piece of digital remastering

Sound

Despite its thorough Dolby Digital 5.1 remix, very little use is made of the extra speakers. Of course, Dimitri Tiomkin's rousing musical score sounds even more over-blown than ever, but the real highlight comes in the long awaited 'last stand' in Chapters 34 & 35, which finally provides an idea of how the surrounds can really be used.

Extras

The usual collector's booklet is accompanied by the original theatrical trailer and a very impressive 40min documentary about the making of the film and the event that inspired it. Considering Wayne himself is no longer around to lend his voice to a commentary track or interviews, this is about as good as it'll ever get.
