Picture

Without a doubt this is a demo quality transfer. The image is crisp, clear and highly detailed. Colours are rich and natural with no problems, and the transfer suffers from no artefacts or compression issues. Blacks are strong with copious amounts of shadow detail and flesh tones are entirely natural. All this adds up to give this film a fantastic transfer.

Sound

What? No dts? Unfortunately this forth disc in the Jack Ryan Box set is the only film not to have the dts option. This is because the DVD was released a few months before the re-releases of the past Ryan films, and before Paramount decided to support the format.
The Dolby Digital soundtrack is again up to demo standards, and makes the most of every scene in the movie. From quiet ambiance filled corridors and offices, to full on Jet fighters and nuclear explosions, the soundtrack creates a fabulous enveloping atmosphere. The surround channels are used to great effect with some excellent panning between the split surrounds and the front soundstage. The track is clear and highly dynamic, and contains some thunderous LFE.

Extras

This is much more like a Special Collectors Edition DVD, with some really useful extras. First up are the two Commentary tracks, one from the Director and Cinematographer, the other from the Director and Novelist. Both are interesting fact filled tracks and offer some great insight into the making of the movies. Next is a rather good look behind the scenes with interviews with cast and crew and presented in a documentary style that is pleasing and worth watching. Also included is a look at the CGI and special effects shooting and is again a very good behind the scenes documentary. And finally we get a Theatrical Trailer, so all in all a nice packageA good movie on a demo quality disc, and for once Paramount give us some worthwhile extras, an excellent package.
